The Science of Getting Rich VS The Secret: What's the Difference?

Self help is making a resurgence once again. With the rates of depression, and more and more people using medication to try and solve their problems, many are seeking a way to change their lives for better, for the good.

Many of the latest crop of books deal with the Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction teaches that we can attract into our lives what we want by what we think. Although I believe this is true, I also believe that this is only part of the equation. The other part of the equation is action. Once you know what you want and what you want to attract into your life, then it's time to take action to bring it into your life.

The Science of Getting Rich is a book written by author Wallace Wattles around 1910. Although Wattles seems to have read widely, and he studied Eastern philosophy as well as Transcendentalism, he clearly had a deep grasp of the Bible. I believe that Wattles was a Christian because much of the wisdom in his work was drawn from the Bible. He clearly understood that there was a very real and personal God who wanted to bless us. What we had to do was open our arms to these blessings and be prepared to receive them.

Although the Secret does parallel this book in many ways, it lacks the very personal nature of God. It reads as if we just open our minds to the world and send out our "wishes" to this great wish genie, everything our heart desires will come to us with little effort on our part. In its defense, this book does give a lot of good information on the Law of Attraction, but that's where the difference ends. It lacks the balance of the Science of Getting Rich although it's clear that the Secret was derived from the Science of Getting Rich.

Another aspect of all of this that made The Secret hard to swallow is this whole idea that for hundreds, possibly thousands of years, there was some kind of secret manuscript that men had died to protect. Although this is dramatic, and it makes the story seem exciting, there's no evidence that this is really true. It was "The Master Key System" by Charles F. Haanel that was banned by the Catholic Church, and that wasn't until the 20th century when it was written. Hardly a few hundred or a few thousand years.

Understand that there is a formula for success. The Secret is a part of that, and it's a very valuable book to read. However, it's only one part of the equation and not the whole part of the equation.

Remember, if you really want to succeed, it's not enough to know what you want, it's more important that you take the action to get it, and you know why you want it. Too often, many have achieved what they wanted and it didn't bring the satisfaction they hoped for. Don't let that happen to you.
