Got Water In The Basement?

Feb 29, 2008
When you are lucky enough to have a basement in your residence, they might be a very versatile room when it is in good shape. There is not much that prevents making the best of the space a basement can provide you more than water problems. A basement's most common uses, which are for laundry equipment and storage, can be aggravated greatly because of a water problem.

The idea of converting your basement into a real living area is a terrible idea when there is a water or moisture problem. If you are experiencing major water problems, then getting a specialist to have the issue resolved is likely going to be the best resolution. Many issues may not be repaired well enough by an amateur home fix it job. You need to always get quite a few estimates if you decide you want to use someone in the water damage business for the task. They need to always be licensed and have a good reputation for their repair.

Your home owner's insurance policy should probably pay for fixing the water problem if it was not a preexisting problem when your home was insured. Insurance coverage vary and even more so where water problems is concerned. If your basement water problem is not too terrible, then you may be able to fix it by yourself.

If you have a problem causing damp walls in the basement, a dehumidifier should help to reduce the moisture, but if you want to live in the basement, you could need to take more serious action. If there are visible wet spots, inside or outside, that you can clearly see, then this is most likely the cause of the dampness. This could be easy enough to repair. Moisture or running water can get in when there is a split or missing mortar in the cement blocks.

To solve the problem you have to open the place up by getting out any loose mortar and brushing the section free of debris. You can do this using a hard bristled brush, chisel and hammer. Wet the place to be corrected with a spray bottle filled with water.

You have to use a hydraulic cement to fill in the hole. You must follow the mixing directions completely. The mixture must have just the right consistency to form a fairly firm ball. Then start inserting the mixture into the open space until it becomes completely filled. Use a trowel to get rid of any excess mortar before the cement begins to gets hard. When it is totally hardened, use the brush to clean the spot off.

If a crack anywhere on the blocks or mortar is not the problem, the moisture and water seepage could be caused by your gutters or the landscaping around the residence foundation. Placing an extension on the bottom of a gutter will help keep water away from a foundation. If this does not work either, now is the time when you to contact a water damage professional to better identify the problem.
