foods that burn more calories - do they actually work?

One trip to the bookstore will show that dieting in America is more than a fad; it's a fullblown phenomenon. With a record number of people obese in the nation, sometimes it seems that there are even more diets than there are people who need them. With so many options available, sifting through them to find the perfect one can be quite a challenge. Adding to the confusion is the fact that each person's body responds to a diet differently from other people's.

The problem that destroys many people's dieting attempts is the "snack factor." Americans love those between-meal snacks more so than they do the big three meals themselves. So if it were possible to build a diet around this concept, around foods that actually destroy calories rather than increase them, this would be a big breakthrough.

In fact, such foods do exist. "Negative calorie foods" are food items that require more energy in the form of calories to consume them than they actually add to your system. And most of these items make perfect snacking material to boot!

It is important to remember that there is actually no such thing as a negative calorie; no food can have negative calories. These foods just have extremely low calorie numbers, making them perfect to eat when trying to diet. The theory is that these foods that burn more calories than what is going in do this as they require more energy to be able to digest them. This in turn burns calories and then helps you to lose weight quicker.

Equally important is how these foods make you feel. Health experts note the importance of having a feeling of fullness in making a diet successful. And most of these "negative calorie foods" do an excellent job of giving you that full feeling. As a result, you're less likely to snack on fatty, calorie-heavy snack foods.

So what, then, are some of these healthy snack foods that actually burn calories? Here are a few:

Apricots, with their sweet, full flavor provide an excellent alternative to fatty desserts.

Cucumbers are good foods to add to most meals, but slice them up, and they make good finger snacks also.

Carrots: These are a perfect snack when you're craving something with crunch.

Strawberries have such a rich, sweet flavor, and are the perfect small size, that these are a nice alternative to candy.

Watermelon: There's no better summertime treat than this low-calorie, juicy snack.

Tomatoes: These add great flavor to your salds, sandwiches, and a whole lot more. And they're great for you!

Cauliflower: This calorie-consuming veggie can be eaten with almost anything, it can be used with a dip, and cooked in most any way.

Zucchini is another food that can be cooked in a variety of ways, and has only 15 calories per 100 grams.

Apples - Apple is quite difficult to digest therefore making it a great food to burn off calories. Your body will work hard to digest the apple and with only 81 calories in a standard apple you will be losing the pounds before you know it.

Hot Chilli Peppers - You could use these as a seasoning on meats, salads and many other foods. Instead of using high fat salad dressings, try hot chilli peppers instead.

There are many more negative calorie foods that you can try. Just check out a diet book at the local store or search the Internet. Before you know it, you'll be an expert on healthy snacking.
