bodybuilding on a budget

Mar 1, 2008
Bodybuilding can be a very expensive venture. Gym memberships, expensive supplements, competition fees and trainers are all expenses incurred by the bodybuilder. The proper food and supplements are essential for bodybuilding success. An aspiring bodybuilder can't swing by McDonalds for the dollar menu, they need good clean foods that will fuel the body.

But you don't have to be rich to be a bodybuilder. You simply need to practice good judgement and good planning. A good plan will make your weight training efforts payoff, even if you have limited money.

Gym memberships can be costly in some areas. There are ways to trim this cost. First, remember that successful bodybuilding does not require a big name gym. In fact, many successful bodybuilders started in (and some still prefer) small "Iron clubs," instead of the big, flashy gyms. These gyms offer a large amount of steel to toss around but often lack the bright, shiny machines. They also lack the distractions, the "loafers", and the "preeners", you often run into in the big name facilities.

Another possibility for cutting the cost of gym membership is to get the gym to sponsor you and your bodybuilding career. Obviously, for this to work you have to show promise as a bodybuilder and do a good job of selling yourself as a worthy investment. Convince them that you will be a good spokesperson for the gym. You will probably have to do advertisement spots, photo shoots, and other promotional activities for the gym. You may also be expected to help out around the gym, such as training new members and cleaning up when needed.

Food is the next big expense for a bodybuilder. Muscle growth requires a lot of good quality, clean, foods. Processed, fat- and sugar-filled foods will not help you achieve the massive, chiseled physique of a bodybuilder. The problem for a budget-conscious person is that high quality protein and complex carbohydrate foods are not cheap. Bodybuilders can not grab the 4 for $2.00 specials on Macaroni and Cheese or the cans of Spaghetti Os. Cheap snack crackers, snack cakes, and sugary fruit juices don't work either. It is important to get solid foods such as chicken, fish, lean red meats, whole-grain (preferably oats) foods, vegetables, and other protein packed foods. The solution is to get a membership in a wholesale club. Wholesale clubs usually offer foods in bulk, at bulk-rate prices. This cuts down the expenses on the food side. Farmer's cooperatives are a good way to get high quality vegetables (and sometimes meats) at reasonable rates, also. If there is no wholesale club around, talk to the manager at the local grocery store about buying certain foods in bulk to save a little money. They can pre-order what they need and then order an extra case for you.

Supplements are another big expense for the up and coming bodybuilder. Sponsorships can sometimes cover the cost of supplements. If there is a new health food or nutrition store opening in the area hit them up for a sponsorship. Instead of money, make arrangements for your supplements in exchange for the promotional work. You might be able to take the same route for a new online supplement company. Another good way to keep supplement costs down is to watch for sales and buy your supplements in bulk when they go on sale.

Another major expense for a bodybuilder is the service of a trainer. Do you really need a trainer? Probably not unless you want to enter into bodybuilding competitions. Even then you've got a lot of hard work ahead of you before you reach that point. If you're advanced enough to consider competing it should be relatively easy to get a sponser to help with some or all of your expenses.

Bodybuilding certainly can be an expensive sport, but it doesn't have to be a bank-breaker. A little common sense, ingenuity, and creativity can help you trim the costs. Think outside the gym and you may find some unique ways to train, eat, and compete within your budget.
