The Comfort Of Play

Mar 1, 2008
Children dealing with abuse or other traumatic problems often find comfort in playing and escaping the harsh realities of their world. Escapism has long had therapeutic value, since early fantasy writers constructed elaborate worlds for their children and grandchildren to "hide out" in and discover new senses of self and purpose. The role of play and creativity in the development of a child cannot be discounted as being among the most important character-building notions in the entire field of child growth.

Children that go through divorces or various changes in their lives often need a place in which to escape. The earliest years of a child's life are of vital importance due to the influential nature of their minds and spirits. The events that occur during a child's learning years impact the way in which that child will grow up and the way in which he or she will approach the hardships of life. For this reason, having a place to play and a place in which to dream is critical for a child.

Times of Trouble

Children often have to deal with the mistakes of the adults in their lives. There are many instances and situations that many young children are forced into and are forced to deal with, as the realities of life and responsibility can often intrude on the idealistic peaceful development of a child. Children that take special comfort in play often have tumultuous lives and experiences of their own, so finding solace is important.

Play therapy is especially beneficial for children dealing with parental separation or divorce, any form of abuse, adoption, foster care, hospitalization or illness, witnessing domestic violence or other forms of trauma, serious accidents, loss of a loved one, or any other situation that can take an emotional toll on a child. Escaping to a safe and happy place is important in these situations, if only for a few moments.

Signs to Watch For

Watching for signs of trouble within children is one of the agonizing realities of life and can be complicated. There are numerous signs to watch for in kids that may suggest that there is some internal trouble, however, and that play therapy would be a suitable option to help the child escape and overcome the negative feelings.

If a child is experiencing especially aggressive behavior, sleep problems, elimination problems, eating difficulties, school problems, issues with learning, separation anxiety, sexual preoccupation, or general difficulty adjusting to a change in family situation, play therapy may be an option.

Play Therapy Options

There are a number of options when it comes to play therapy. These options will, of course, depend on the child and on the nature of the situation. Playing with stuffed animals and having another "voice" to talk to is often a great outlet for a child, as he or she can discuss his or her deepest fears and feelings with a stuffed bear or bunny.

Dollhouses, dolls, or other construction-type toys are also excellent ideas for play therapy. This allows the child to create and exist within a different realm, if only for a few minutes. This form of practical escapism is a great option for children with serious difficulties within their lives and can be a real blessing for them.
