Do You Have Water Problems With Your Windows And Doors?

Mar 2, 2008
Our houses are often one of, if not the most substantial investment that we may make in our entire lifetime. Discouraging destruction to our home is a vital factor in overseeing its worth. A major thing that can cause the so many problems for the home is water damage. Water issues can come from a whole range of things. Although most of us may regularly check our water pipes and roof tops for signs of intruding water situations, quite a few places we might overlook entirely until it has already taken place. These areas are often the windows and doors. Other than the house top and exterior walls of our residence, the doors and windows get affected just as much by water all the time from weather such as rain, sleet, and snow.

We open and close a lot of the doors on our house constantly and water issues with these will not go unnoticed for long, but with less used doors and windows, water damage may occur slowly with time and evade our attention all together. It is important to add windows and doors to that regular check list if they are not already a part of your inspection.

So, what should you do when you locate a door or window that water is causing destruction to? That depends on how much harm has already occurred. When doors are inundated with excessive moisture or streaming water, if the door is wood, it can cause the door or its frame to swell. This will sooner or later make the door stick and refuse to open or close easily. Water could be coming down the outside wall and wetting the door in bad weather. You must discover what is causing the problem and repair whatever is needed. It might create rusting on metal doors and frames over long periods of time. A small amount of prevention is much better than to put off repairing the problem and having to purchase a whole new door and frame.

Windows exposed to too much water may cause similar issues. Leaking gutters may many times be the reason that some windows and doors are exposed to too much water. With wooden windows, damage might take place pretty quickly. They also might swell shut and can not be opened at all.

Caulking that is old can wither up and turn loose from the building, window panes, or doors and allow water in around edges. Maintaining these places that need caulking is essential. Be sure you use the recommended caulking for exterior surfaces. It is especially made for weather proofing and repelling water. It stops it from getting in around the installation places. Vinyl windows also need to be caulked around installation areas too. It could take longer to damage a metal doors and windows, but it still needs to be fixed or replaced if it rusts out.
