One extremely effective method that is commonly used online for this is the "name capture page" which is a page that explains the benefits of the free chapter you are giving away and makes it mandatory that the visitor give you their name and email address before they can proceed.

Now, in this free chapter, make sure you include the content page of the e-book so that the customer can see what this e-book will cover. Make the titles of the content page catchy and make them appeal to the needs and wants of the customer. This will make them excited and increase the interest for your e-book.
