Beneficial Puppy Care Info For You and Your New Puppy

Mar 5, 2008
There are few things cuter than a new puppy - at least until you bring one home and watch him soil your carpet and chew on your favorite sofa! Those adorable faces in the pet store window are going to take some effort on your part to care for and train.

The great news is that if you prepare yourself and your family well, with lots of puppy information before your new family member arrives, all of you will survive those early days much better. The key is have all the tools and information you need to be the best puppy owner that you can be and what your puppy deserves.

Don't Forget the Supplies - Stock Up

To get puppy information quickly it's best to go online and do a search on pet supplies for a new puppy. You'll find lots and lots of information, both good and useless so it's important to be very critical of what you read. There are lots of places offline also to get loads of great information, places like your local library (free info!), veterinarian's office or the shelter or kennel that you bought or adopt your puppy from.

Puppies need lots of water and high quality food so the first thing you should get are bowls for water and food. There's also lots of different kinds of dry foods for puppies so that is also a top priority. This should be of high quality as it's very important for your puppy's health. You probably should get a crate for your puppy as most puppy guides recommend crate training dogs. You should line the bottom of the crate with an old blanket or a towel to make it comfortable for your new puppy. It might be a good idea to get a small piece of cloth from puppy's old home as the smell of that makes it feel more safe and comfortable in the beginning.

There are few other essentials you'll need like collar and leash plus few chew toys and grooming supplies like shampoo and nail clippers. One thing which is very important is to avoid items like rawhide chew toys as those can break off and get stucked in small pup's throat. instead of that get items like Nylabone chew toy for playtime. These toys will hopefully deter your puppy from teething on other items like your gorgeous new shoes or those designer living room chairs! Puppy's are like small children, their teeth are forming and puppies need something to bite on. Puppies also need a lot activity and affection. Just don't overdo it as puppies need also lots of sleep and rest so they don't become restless and aggressive as they get older.

Housebreaking

Housebreaking is one of the first training objectives for your new puppy and luckily there's a lot of material available so you can complete this phase properly. A crate is very good to have at this point as your puppy is unlikely to soil his crate when he is inside.

You'll need lots of patience and plenty of cleaning supplies on hand as accidents can and will happen on occasion. It will take some time for your puppy to understand this routine so be patient. For more puppy care information about housebreaking check the Internet or ask advice from the breeder or veterinarian.
