Do You Need a Reason to Be Happy?

Mar 6, 2008
At some point in your life, you will encounter the basic question that keeps many of us up at night am I happy enough? When you consider the answer, you will realize that you may not be and that you need to make changes in order to make sure you can find that joy again. While many self help books and motivational articles will tell you that you need a reason to help you get started - is this really the truth?

Motivation That Comes From Nowhere

When you get up in the morning to make coffee, you don't typically have a reason for doing so. You just do it because that's what you do every morning. While it does make you happy, you haven't consciously said to yourself, "The reason why I'm getting up to make the coffee is to please myself." This may seem like an odd comparison, but let's look closely at this.

It is said that up to 95% of our actions every day are the result of habits. This means that most of what we do is because we simply think we should do them - not because we're consciously trying to lift our moods. Sure, there may be times when we do make choices based on the outcome, but it certainly isn't the norm.

Yet still, we are motivated to continue through our lives, doing things that please others and that help us create a life that serves to support us and our families. We go through the motions of a life we lead, without any question as to why we do what we do. But where is the reason for acting in this way?

Happiness is Another Word for Possibility

Perhaps our definition of happiness has become too skewed. We believe that in order to truly be happy, we need to look like someone else that we know or have the life they have. After all, they look happy and that must be the answer then. However, you don't need a reason to have a dream or to want to be happy - what you do need is the ability to take action in order to make this happiness real.

The possibility of happiness it he far fetched thought we keep in our minds when we can't seem to push or give that extra effort during a typical day. While it's not necessarily guiding us to our goals and dreams, the possibility that they could come true anyways is certain enough to keep us going.

We don't need a reason, a good reason, or even a clue as to why we make certain choices or why certain things make us happy - we can just know that we are happy, that we are content, that we are satisfied.

Sure, you can have reasons for wanting to lose weight, volunteer, or simply just be a better parent - and these will certainly help you as your motivation wanes or your energy falters. But in the end, it's not about the reasons you can uncover; it's about the actions you take, the steps you walk that help you uncover your possible dream.
