Are You Deciding Between Entry-Level GPS Navigators?
Common TomTom GPS GPS Navigators Device Features
The most important thing about introducing a GPS device to a new user is the interface and fortunately, all TomTom GPS navigators manage to all have that same friendly interface. The touchscreen interface makes it easy to do route planning or go through the menus to access other features.
Recent entry-level TomTom GPS Navigators units give you an appealing, colorful widescreen display with a compact, slim profile. The detailed maps and 3D views you'll see on one of these displays will give you an improved perspective on your driving. A TomTom GPS device will let you get rid of all those atlases and maps you have in the back of the car.
GPS units typically come with maps providing coverage of the United States, and some also include maps of Canada and Mexico. The maps are interactive in the sense that you're able to add points of interest for the locations you frequently visit. You're also able to zoom in and out. Even if you never add any points of interest of your own, you'll still have plenty of points of interest as soon as you turn on your GPS unit. The roads will also be mapped properly.
Properly mapped roads give these entry-level devices a good advantage because it allows the IQ Routes technology to work its magic. This feature promises to reveal the fastest route to any destination you choose by relying on traffic conditions. If you are not in a hurry but wish to save as much fuel as possible, you can use the Eco Routes feature instead.
Automotive GPS units like the TomTom VIA, ONE and GO series models will also give you the important text-to-speech feature, which helps you keep your eyes on the road instead of on your navigation device. These devices will call out your next turn and even say the street name to prevent possible confusion.
If you want to spend just a bit more on your GPS device, the TomTom VIA 1435T and certain other models will give you Bluetooth and voice recognition. The voice recognition feature can make you a safer driver because you'll be able to tell your GPS what to do without touching the display. The Bluetooth feature, once it's linked, will let you use your GPS unit to make and receive phone calls.
The TomTom VIA series devices provide plenty of features for less than $170.
