What is Diabetes?

Mar 8, 2008
The disease of diabetes certainly seems to be getting a lot of attention these days. It is thought to be one of the fastest growing diseases in the world causing concern from organizations such as the World Health Organization. So what is diabetes? This article will cover what it is and the different types of diabetes.

A person with diabetes has a high level of sugar in their bloodstream. Their body cannot process the sugar or glucose in the blood. Sugar is the energy that keeps the body's cells alive. Without this energy the cells begin to starve.

A common belief that is largely unfounded is that consuming too much sugar will give you diabetes. This is not strictly true. Eating or drinking too much sugar will increase your calorific intake. This could lead to a gain in weight if a person did not exercise enough.

If this continued for too long the person could become obese or be long term over weight. And there seems to be a definite link between type 2 diabetes and weight. A person that is over weight is at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than a person who is a normal weight for their size and sex.

Another common belief is that many people have diabetes without even knowing. This is true as quite often there are no unique symptoms of diabetes or simply no symptoms at all. For instance, a common symptom is tiredness. This could be attributed to stress, working too hard or a number of other things.

Some of the common symptoms are :

Constantly thirsty (polydipsia).

Increased urination (polyuria).

Excessive eating without any noticeable gain in weight (usually weight loss).

Extreme fatigue.

Nausea and a general feeling of being ill.

Yeast infections.

Blurred or double vision.

Male impotence.

One or more of these symptoms should convince you to visit your health care provider.

Your body may no longer make the hormone insulin that allows sugar to be converted to energy. This is known as type 1 diabetes.

Or, your body can become immune or resistant to insulin such that it cannot process the sugar. This is known as type 2 diabetes. A similar condition, known as gestational diabetes also occurs but lasts during pregnancy and normally stops after the birth.

There is still no cure for diabetes and it lasts for life. The best approach is ongoing treatment and regular monitoring of the disease. Treatment is relatively easy after a little adjustment of current lifestyles.

Treatment involves getting a diabetic diet plan. A diet plan for diabetes is essentially a well balanced meal plan with certain foods taken infrequently as a treat. Treatment also includes getting regular exercise. For people with type 1 diabetes it will also include regular injections of insulin, usually before each meal or when the blood sugar reading is high. Type 2 diabetics may have to take medication to make the body more responsive to insulin. Once a person gets into this routine, it is quite easy to lead a normal life without diabetes impacting your life greatly.
