Tips On Buying Car Stereos

Mar 9, 2008
The Car stereo system has evolved a long way from the old standard AM-FM Radio and Tape Deck combo. Today, technology has taken its progress to a new height. The in-vehicle stereo system today sometimes includes DVD video players, television and navigation systems. These systems also provide excellent sound quality.

The quality of sound in a car stereo system depends on a several factors. It depends on the type and quality of the media player system, the type of speakers used, the acoustics of the vehicle and interference from other devices in the car.

However, just like choosing the right car for you to drive, buying a stereo system for your car can often leave you confused. There are various options in the market that are available to you when buying a stereo system for your car.

You can choose from the in-dash CD player, which is usually combined with the radio tuner and supports WMA and Mp3 files. Others looking for something different can opt for an in-dash CD Receiver, which is functioned with multiple CD and cassette changer. You can always connect a portable CD player to an existing in-dash audio unit using either a cable and adapter or a bluetooth wireless connection. The choice is simply yours.

While choosing a car stereo system, a few things should be taken into consideration. For example, will it fit into the vehicle and will it look nice cosmetically with the dash and other electronics in the car?

Most decks have standardized form factors and usually fit into most cars, but there are exceptions. Make sure that the deck is suited for your car. You are usually pretty safe if the car stereo is made for the same market as the source of your car.

On the other hand, cosmetic integration can be a little more complex. In many cases it can be easily resolved through customization features, since many decks allow you to change the faceplates and color of the display.

After you have chosen the player for your car, its time to choose the speakers or amplifiers. There are various factors involved while choosing the right speakers for your car. It begins with the design or the type of speakers along with technical specifications along with fitting and mounting.

Speaker design is all about the right combination of sound drivers for midrange, subwoofer and tweeter. Depending upon the combination, the set is known as a two-way, three-way or four-way speaker system. Car speaker specifications are similar to home audio speakers, and the main difference lies in technical specification.

The speaker technical specifications are inclusive of sensitivity, frequency response, and signal to noise ratio, power handling and impedance.

The fittings and mountings are selected depending upon where you choose to position the speakers. Car stereo speakers are either top mounted or bottom mounted. Clearance depth is most important when installing new speakers in a non-factory speaker location. So check all of your components carefully before the purchase.
