The History of the English Mastiff

Mar 11, 2008
When you hear the word "mastiff" it is no doubt the English mastiff that first comes to mind. These large dogs have a fearsome appearance, standing up to 30" tall at the shoulder and have a stance reminiscent of a pit bull. Weighing in anywhere between 140-230 pounds, this is certainly a breed that demands respect.

Mastiff actually is translated to 'masty' in Anglo-Saxon. The brutal ancestry of this amazing dog is something you can find out of a horror movie. These dogs were used for the entertainment of the Queen.

This fearsome heritage led to their adoption as guard dogs; in that capacity, the breed found its way to the US. Despite their appearance and history of being used as attack dogs, they are in fact very affectionate and make excellent pets, even if you have children.

Gentle and affectionate, they are good with children. They are calm and loving, yet still able to serve as a guard dog when required. Few things are as frightening to a would-be burglar as the sight of a mastiff.

Like any larger breed, an English Mastiff will need plenty of room to get adequate exercise. Though living indoors is not a problem for them, they do need a good walk or run every day. With proper diet and plenty of exercise, you can expect your dog to live to around 10 years of age.

Despite a few minor health problems, the English mastiff is a very well rounded dog. Some of the health problems range from hip dysplasia to obesity. They are a good guard dog with the love and gentleness of a kitten. They are extremely loyal to the entire family and they love kids. It is highly recommended to get to know your breeder before you purchase your dog. Know that they are a legit breeder that genuinely loves the breed.

Besides the aforementioned minor medical issues, there is one other downside to having an English mastiff: They do slobber, which is more of a concern to some than to others. Overall, they make an excellent family pet for any home. All of the good traits the breed possesses are certain to make you a happy dog owner.

If you'd like to learn more about the English Mastiff, seek out information from others who have decided to adopt one of these gentle giants. There are many websites and forums that can answer just about any question you may have about choosing and living with this magnificent breed. After all, a dog is a member of the family; you'll want all of the information at hand before you make a big decision like buying a dog.
