How To Make The Most Out Of Your Hot Stone Therapy Experience

Mar 11, 2008
Finding an efficient and skillful therapist is one of the ways to ensure that you have a blissful hot stone massage treatment. But while most of the wonderful experience depends on the hands of the therapist, you too have a part on how to make the massage even more pleasurable and worthwhile.

Here are some tips on how to make the most out of your massage experience:

1. Drink plenty of water before and after the session not only to enhance the positive effects of the therapy but to also help flush out unwanted toxins from your body.

2. Do not eat a heavy meal at least one hour before the session. If you get hungry and need to eat, satisfy your craving by munching on light crackers.

3. Arrive early on the spa or massage center so you will have time to relax, cool down and make use of their facilities such as whirlpool, steam bath or sauna.

4. Take slow, deep breaths before the session. Do your best to calm your mind. Most spas have meditation rooms, which you can use if you find it hard to relax.

5. Do not apply moisturizer on your skin before the treatment. This may interfere with the oils or lotions that the therapist will be using.

6. Avoid wearing accessories when going for a massage. Dressing lightly is the appropriate clothing when getting a hot stone therapy.

7. Know what to expect. If it is your first time to go for this kind of therapy, there may be a part of you that is anxious about what is going to happen. Questions like "Will the stones scald me?" or "Do I need to be naked?" may cause anxiety in you and make it difficult for you to relax. It is a good idea to read up about hot stone therapy so you know what will happen during the session.

8. Have an open communication with your therapist. If you are concerned about anything, do not hesitate to tell him or her. If you have any issues about the amount of pressure, intensity of the stone's heat, temperature of the room, lighting or music, be sure to speak up. A good therapist will adjust to satisfy your needs.

9. Do not feel obliged to engage in a conversation with the therapist. Remember, it is all right if you want to indulge in the massage quietly. It is not rude to take a nap during the session.

10. Loosen up your muscles during the session. It is more difficult to relieve tightened up muscles.

11. Do not get off the massage table immediately after the treatment. Allow yourself to have some down time to rest. It is okay to catch a few winks but limit your nap to a few minutes.

12. Enjoy the experience. This is probably the most important tip of all. If you let your mind race and think about work and other stress related stuff, the therapy will be futile. It is very important that you engage yourself in the experience for you to get the most out of it.

With all the pleasures and benefits that a hot stone therapy can bring into your life, it really is not hard to fall in love with it. Good thing this kind of addiction does not have any bad side effects.
