Success is easy in Washington DC!

Mar 14, 2008
You remember what people say about capitals of nations? That they are so boring you might as well cross it out from your itinerary list? Well, Washington is sure an exception. As the capital of the United States of America, Washington DC exudes out that cozy atmosphere with all the tree-dotted avenues and 18th century structures. When you talk about Washington DC, we talk about America's dreams and realities. It has a population of about 607,000 and an area of 65 square miles.

Being the city that houses the White House, US Capitol and other key national institutions, it is no wonder why a lot of people go here. You can easily make it big here! Success is not hard to come by as long as you know what is in store for you! If you have just settled in, enjoy the sights then find a way to work for those tourist spots!

So how to make it big in Washington DC anyway? Read up and mull over it!

1. Go for the biggest companies in Washington DC.

Washington Post launched The Post 200 which lists down all the top 200 companies in the city. So if you want to be successful, hunt these successful companies like Choice Hotels International Inc., FTI Consulting Inc., Capital Source Inc., Federal Reality Investment Trust, Allied Capital Corp., Fairchild Corp., American Capital Strategies Ltd., EPlus Inc., Radio One, PRA International, Ciena Corp., Rowe Cos., Duratek Inc., Corporate Executive Board Co., LaSalle Hotel Properties., SI International Inc., Trex Co., TNS Inc., XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., Corporate Office Properties Trust, MicroStrategy Inc., VSE Corp., InPhonic Inc., PEC Solutions Inc., Capital Automotive REIT, webMethods Inc., Fieldstone Investment Corp., LCC International Inc., Manugistics Group Inc., Martek Biosciences Corporation, Strayer Education Inc., Federal Agricultural Mortgage Corporation, Washington Real Estate Investment Trust, Allied Defense Group Inc., TeleCommunication Systems Inc., CompuDyne Corp., Advisory Board Co., Bowl America Inc., GSE Systems Inc., Orbimage Inc., Cuisine Solutions and yes, The Washington Post!

Aspiring actors, dancers and singers, audition at every chance you get at this center where there are six theaters that feature the ballets, musical performances and awesome places. If you are really good enough, you might end up playing for the Washington Opera and National Symphony Opera where they are JFK Center for the Performing Arts regulars.

3. If you are artistically inclined, show your stuff at the Smithsonian Institution.

The Smithsonian Institution has 16 museums and art galleries and it's so big it would take you one day to see everything! If your work lands here, then you know you've already made it!

You might also want to check out the National Gallery of Art.

4. Love anything education, then head for the National Geographic Society's Explorers Hall.

If you are a budding teacher, then you can start practicing your skills here!

5. Work in Georgetown!

Georgetown is where the trendiest and priciest shops are! This place is so busy you will not run out of things to do and jobs to have!

6. Into broadcasting?

If you are dreaming to be next Peter Jennings or Christiane Amanpour, then working for the Voice of America will do wonders to you. Get a position in the newsroom and you are guaranteed a fast ascent.

7. Run for a position? Why not?

The White House is here, so is the Pentagon and even the FBI! So if you just work hard and dream big, you might snag a position in any of the three! From entry level you can work your way to the top!

You might get dissuaded if you haven't accomplished a lot in the first few months of your stay in the Washington DC. Hey, you do not have to worry. If you are one hardworking and patient person, it will not be long when you will be able to say to your family and friends with pride: "Washington DC is where it's at!"
