Remodeling a Wet Basement

Mar 15, 2008
When we are fortunate enough to have a basement in our living space, they might be a very versatile room when it does not get wet. There is not anything that hinders you from making the best of the living space a basement can provide more than wetness. A basement's most common uses, which are for storage and laundry equipment, can be hindered quite often because of a water problem.

Remodeling your basement into comfortable living room is unimaginable when there is a water or moisture problem. If you are having large water problems, then employing a water damage business to have the issue fixed is probably going to be the easiest resolution. Many water issues can not be repaired well enough by an amateur home repair job. You should get several estimates when you decide to hire someone.

Your home owner's insurance policy should cover fixing the problem if it was not a preexisting condition before your home was insured. Insurance companies and their policies vary and especially with water issues. If your basement water dilemma is not really bad, then you might be able to repair it on your own.

If you have a problem with damp walls in the basement, a dehumidifier will help to solve the problem, but if you want to make living space in the basement, you will want to take more action. If there are obvious soaked places which you can plainly notice, then that is most likely the source of the water. This should be fairly easy to repair. Wetness or running water can get in when there is a split or mortar missing in the concrete cinder blocks.

To correct the situation you have to open the section up by getting out any loose mortar and brushing the damaged place clean of debris. You can do this by using a hammer, a chisel, along with a steel or hard bristled brush. Wet the spot to be corrected with a spray bottle containing water.

You will use a hydraulic cement to fill in the damaged area. Follow the mixing directions carefully. The mixture will need to have just enough consistency to create a fairly firm ball. Begin inserting the mixture into the opening until it is completely filled. Use a trowel to remove any extra mortar before the cement begins to gets hard. When it is thoroughly hardened, use the brush to buff the area off.

If a crack anywhere on the blocks or mortar does not appear to be your problem, the wetness and water flow can be caused from your gutters or the landscaping around the residence foundation. Putting an extension to the bottom of a gutter is good to keep the water away from the foundation. If this does not work either, now is the time when you need to contact that water damage professional to better identify the problem.
