Tip Top Cleaning Tips For Students

Mar 17, 2008
Well, now you have finally reached the stage of living alone and independently from your parents, either by enrolling into university or by starting an apprenticeship. Either way you are out of the house and ready to lead the adult life you have always wanted. Plenty of late nights, partying, no curfews and best of all, your bedroom can be as messy as you want it to be. Until a month later, you find the dishes are piling up high, the bins need emptying and your room is like a jungle.

You look in your kitchen cupboards and you find you have forgotten to stock up on cleaning products - what do you do next? This is a common experience for many students who have moved out into their own space. Reality sets in just as things quite literally become messy and unbearable. How are you going to keep up with your cleaning and study/work at the same time?

Well it would seem that you are in a slight dilemma of some sort, but using cleaning products and doing a bit spring cleaning need not be a difficult task. Nobody in the right mind would want to live in a pigsty. The key is to start from the top and work your way to the bottom. So begin with your bedrooms and bathroom upstairs, by tidying up any mess and cleaning out the bins. Getting rid of all the topical mess will make it easier for you to give the surfaces a wipe.

In terms of using cleaning products, this is something that should not be taken lightly. Always wear rubber gloves to protect your skin, some of the chemical substances in certain products may cause irritation so you do not want to risk it. You will need to buy paper towels, separate sponges for you dishes and your surfaces, a mop, broom, dustpan and brush, duster, dry cloth and towel. Kitchen towels will help to clean windows and mirrors.

Be careful with storing your cleaning products away. Keep the kitchen and bathroom products separate, preferably keeping in the bottom cupboards in their designated room. This will ensure you are using the right products for the right area. When wiping down the surfaces spray liberally around the area and wipe in circular motions, taking care of catching all corners. Ideally, you should have the counter tops and flats surfaces free from clutter, this way you can get rid of any excess dust.

Before placing everything back on, make sure the surface is dry and the products have disappeared. Then you can continue putting everything back the way they were. Once a week you should allocate a day for deep cleaning, which will involve at least half the day, to take everything out of cupboards and giving everything a wipe down. When all of the surfaces are clean and dust free, then you can work on vacuuming the floor, or mopping the tiles down.

Washing dishes should be something completed every day. The worst thing you can do is to leave them piling up as then it will be harder to clean up. The old saying, clean as you go, has its place and is a very important saying to remember. Buy a dish bowl and enough washing up liquid to last you a while, always wash the suds off and never use a dishcloth. Personally, I prefer to use disposable sponges, these are cheap to buy and much safer to use. You can towel dry your dishes but it is best to air-dry them for a short while before storing them away.

Finally, take pride in the home you are living in. Buy fresh flowers to allow natural aromas in and keep your windows open for an extra bit of freshness. You can even put on your favourite music while you clean, just to keep you entertained and give you motivation.
