You Could Have Sleep Apnea And Not Even Know It

Mar 18, 2008
What's sleep apnia you ask? Here's the answer folks and it's not pretty.

The word comes from the Greek, like many of the words in the Indo-European group, and means "to breathe"; some say "without breath" and if that leaves you breathless in Seattle, then you've come to the right blog, by golly.

Here's the Skinny On Sleep Apnea And Its Causes

There are two types of sleep apnea-one is obstructive sleep apnea and the other is central sleep apnea. The first, obstructive sleep apnea is the most common and occurs when the muscles in the throat relax. This results in the airway tightening and causes the breathing to stop. The brain then sends signals to wake you up and begin the breathing process again. Many people with this type of sleep apnea are not even aware that their sleep is being interrupted at night.

When the brain screws up and doesn[t send signals to wake up, this is called central sleep apnea. You may wake up anyway, because you have stopped breathing. Most people with central sleep apnea can remember that they woke up during their sleep period. In some cases, the two types can be combined and this is called mixed sleep apnea. All types reqauire immediate medical attention.

The cardiovascular system can bet involved with sleep apnea because every time an individual stops breathing, the oxygen in the body and brain is diminished. This is just one of the many side effects of sleep apnea.

Men are less prone to sleep apnea than women as we get older.

Manisfestations Of Sleep Apnea

When learning what is sleep apnea, it is important to find out just what the symptoms of this disorder are. People with sleep apnea are not getting good nights sleep and will often find themselves very tired during the day. Some people with sleep apnea also complain of headaches, sore throats in the morning and one of the most common complaints is loud snoring, although this doesn't always indicate sleep apnea.

As you become aware of these sleep apnea problems, the next step is to consult your medical professional to find out what the main problem is. You medical professional may refer you to a sleep laboratory where you will sleep for a few nights and they will perform tests to pin down the exact nature of your sleep apnea problem. Then the medial professional will be able to diagnose the problem and suggest way to mitiagate or eliminate it.

I'm hope I have made you realize that sleep apnea cannot be ignored. It is a very dangerous condition that causes unecessary deaths every year. Millions of them around the world. So please, if you think you have a sleeping problem, it you think you have any of the symptoms of sleep apnea, then it is time to see a doctor about it and get some help. Treatment can often cure or at least alleviate some of the symptoms so you don't die.
