Taking a Look at Patchy Hair Loss

Mar 18, 2008
Are you suddenly finding small patches of baldness spread over different parts of your body? Do they seem to heal and then reappear in new locations? If so, you are suffering from patchy hair loss.

Suddenly finding patchy hair loss is discouraging and those afflicted with the condition generally try to mask their condition however possible. Sufferers may wear hats or don long clothing even when the weather doesn't dictate a need. They may try to comb their hair over or hide the patches with cosmetics.

There are a number of causes of patchy hair loss, but it is important to note that patchy hair loss is not genetic. Men and women are equally susceptible to the condition. There is no way to determine who will be affected, when, or why.

So what are the causes of patchy hair loss? Some illnesses may cause this embarrassing condition, especially those that last for a period of six months or more. Fungal infections such as ringworm may also contribute to patchy hair loss, especially at the area of infection.

It is especially important to seek medical attention if you think you hair loss was caused by a fungal infection. Fungal infections can spread to other areas of the body, making your hair loss even worse. They are also highly contagoius so you will want to avoid sharing your infection with others.

Fortunately, ringworm can be treated with a topical cream prescribed by your physician. You will find your patchy hair loss clearning up as your infection disappears. Other instances of patchy hair loss will generally clear up on their own within a year.

Do not be afraid to visit your physican, hair care specialist, or mental health professional if you are having trouble dealing with your patchy hair loss. Your physican may be able to help you find alternative treatment methods and your mental health professional will be able to provide moral and emotional support while you deal with your condition.

Sudden patchy hair loss caused by an infection will clear up as the infection is eradicated. Patchy hair loss caused by stress or other infections may take longer to heal, but will benefit from a healthy diet high in vitamins and minerals. The healing process, usually between six months and a year, will also benefit from regular daily exercise. Take special care of your body and your patchy hair loss will clear up sooner rather than later.
