Mar 20, 2008
You can lower your high cholesterol with 2 approaches, the naturally way or by modern day medications. It is important to know that by lower the high cholesterol level, we also reduce the risk of running into vascular disease like heart attack, stroke and other related health problems.

In most of the medical treatment of high cholesterol, it is usually targeted at lowering the level of bad cholesterol or LDL cholesterol in the body. But for some, the combination of both lowering the bad cholesterol and increasing the level good cholesterol the HDL cholesterol may be needed. We look at the treatment process in this article.

Logically, before any treatment can be started, it will be fairly important to know the cholesterol level and the ration of total cholesterol over good cholesterol. This is usually done through a blood test in the doctor's office. The number will give your doctor an idea how serious the cholesterol problem is and how vigorous should the treatment be.

Usually the first thing your doctor will discussed with you, once you know your cholesterol level, is the dietary changes. A diet that comprised of low fats, high fiber like fresh foods, fruits and vegetables will be recommended. This will reduce the intake of the bad fats into your body.

Then come the exercise, after looking at dietary changes. Higher activities level and exercise will improve the HDL or good cholesterol level, and of course shed some weight along the way. Doctor will most likely recommend regular exercise routine if you do not have any regular exercise yet.

For people with a history of coronary artery disease, high blood pressure or diabetes, medication will be started right away. As people with such profile are at a higher risk for heart attack and stroke.

Statin will most likely be the drug for people who needs to start medication immediately. It will help slow down the amount of cholesterol that the body will produce by itself, moreover, it can help reduce the risk of many of the complications that are associated with high cholesterol. There are time may use other medications that is not statin based. These are to prevent the amount of cholesterol that will be absorbed from the food source. If you are prescribed with statin, do understand that it may cause some side effects.

Continuing your treatment Once you have started a cholesterol-lowering treatment, your doctor will usually want to check your cholesterol periodically to see what sort of progress you are making. If you are attempting to lower cholesterol through diet alone, this will tell you if you need to add in a medication as well. If you are already on a medication, it will let you and your doctor know whether or not the dosing and medication are appropriate.

These are the time you can talk to your doctor on any concerns that you may have, eg difficulty with diet, so your doctor can recommend a dietitian. Doctor may also change the medications if you suffer from the side effects of the current medication. Alternatives could also be suggested if you could not keep your exercise routine due to your health conditions.
