Essential Bodybuilding Supplements

Mar 20, 2008
Bodybuilding supplements are substances that aid in faster healing and recovery from muscle tissue damages caused by strength training exercises in body builders. They assist in building of healthy muscle tissues. However, bodybuilding supplements do not trigger any alteration in the inherent testosterone or growth hormone levels nor do they boost their levels in the body beyond the naturally existing levels. They must be taken along with a proper diet, sufficient rest and the correct weight training program.

During bodybuilding, the body's nutrient requirements get skyrocketed. As such, the body must be fed with a rich high calorie diet as well as with bodybuilding supplements to prevent nutrient deficiencies. While dietary supplements pumps the body with additional nutrients (such as proteins, amino acids, minerals, and vitamins), exercise supplements such as creatine enhance the concentration of a particular substance much more than what is inherently present in the body or naturally consumed from dietary sources. These supplements are exclusively taken in sufficiently large doses for the purpose of building muscles or enhancing athletic performance levels.

There are a number of supplements and nutrients that have been shown to be very useful for body building. Some of these basic body building supplements include - a multiple Vitamin and Mineral formula, protein supplements, antioxidants such as Vitamin-C and Vitamin-E, essential fatty acids, etc.

Protein supplements are very significant bodybuilding supplements and are categorized into different types based on their biological values. Whey proteins, egg proteins and milk proteins are considered the best protein sources.

Similarly, Protein supplements are also categorized into different types based on their chemical composition - such as weight gainers (contains whey proteins and a very high carbohydrate content), meal replacement powders (contains whey proteins and a very low carbohydrate content along with essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals), protein powders (contains whey proteins and a very low carbohydrate content), protein bars, beef liver tablets.

Another very vital bodybuilding supplement is creatine. Creatine is also known to increase the strength, energy, and mass of the muscle tissues. Creatine absorbs water and maintains the adjoining muscle tissue cells in a turgid state. It also hastens muscle repair and recovery after a workout. Experts recommend taking one dose early in the morning every day or immediately after a workout can show miraculous results. In addition to synthetic creatine supplements in order to hasten the muscle building process, natural hormone modifiers must also be taken to enhance the growth hormone levels in the body.

Antioxidants supplements are another group of bodybuilding supplements which protect the body from the harmful impacts of free radicals. Significant antioxidant supplements include polyphenols and resveratrol, which are found is green tea. Apart from these antioxidant supplements, Vitamin-A and beta-carotenoids are also very crucial, and so are the essential fatty acids, which are widely known for their fat burning and energy production qualities.

Apart from all the above mentioned supplements, it is also very important to check excessive muscle breakdown in the body after a workout, which is often triggered by cortisol. Body builders must take supplements to control the levels of cortisol in the body. The inflammatory response of the body after a work out can be controlled by administering antioxidants such as Vitamin-C and Vitamin-E to the body in the form of dietary supplements.
