When You Have To Make A Claim

Mar 27, 2008
Oh, no! Your car's been in an accident! You have insurance - does that mean everything will be ok? You calm yourself down enough to make a quick call to your insurance agent. That seems to be going OK, until they tell you that they can't help you, and you've got to call the claims department. What will they ask? What will they say? Now you really start to worry.

Before you get too worked up, take a breath. These days, submitting a claim to your auto insurance agency is really not that painful a process. Most companies have developed efficient, fair processes for handling claims. It saves them money, and good customer service helps them keep the premiums flowing in.

Most agencies will recommend a repair shop to you, and you can have your car towed right to them. The agencies have been through this many times, and they know which shops provide the best service, and honest prices. They may ask you if you'd prefer a different shop, but going with their pick is usually the best idea. Sometimes they can handle the entire process with just a few phone calls.

Usually, your claim will be processed without much involvement on our part. The repair shop will work directly with the company in terms of quoting repair costs and getting the insurance company's authorization. All they may need from you is a signature so that they can go to work on your vehicle.

Even with all the conveniences today, when submitting a car insurance claim, you need to be a discerning customer. Make sure that the repair order fully covers the damage to you car. Sometimes damage can be hidden. A superficial bang can often mask the true problems. Discuss this with your repair shop before and after the work is done. Also be sure to fully inspect your car before you drive it off the lot. Submitting a car insurance claim twice for the same accident is always more troublesome.

And speaking of being a discerning customer, remember Cheap Auto Insurance pays for itself. If you saved a few dollars on your monthly premium and you spend days and weeks arguing with your insurance provider over the claim and the repair, what have you really saved?

Some agencies outsource their claims, meaning that another company is actually in charge of making the decisions regarding repair. This is especially true if there is a possibility that the car will be declared \"totaled.\" If this is the case, make sure you know what the true value of your vehicle is. You can talk to a bank loan officer, a car dealership, or use the internet to get an idea of what this is.

The good news is that most claims are handled quickly and without much effort on your part. If for any reason you are unsatisfied with the way your insurance agency handles the process or don't like the outcome, let them know by taking your business elsewhere.
