Salsa is danced on a core rhythm that lasts for two measures of four beats each. Salsa is usually a partner dance, although there are recognized solo steps and some forms are danced in groups of couples, with frequent exchanges of partner. Salsa evolved steadily through the later 1970s and into the 80s and 90s. Salsa is a sexy passionate hobby where the music will move you.

Some form of social dancing has probably existed since the beginning of time. Dancing On2 means that the break step synchronizes with the accented slap of the tumbao, the pattern played on the conga drums, while the On1 break step synchronizes with the first beat of the measure. Dancing is also a really good way to lose body weight, Because it's such fun and you're concentrating on learning something new, you don't realise until the end of the class how much exersise you're doing. Music suitable for dancing ranges from slow at about 70 beats per minute to its fastest at around 140 beats per minute though most dancing is done to music somewhere between 80-120 beats per minute. Few would disagree that the music and dance forms originate largely in Cuban Son, most agree that Salsa as we know it today is a North American interpretation of the older forms. The basic step typically uses three steps each measure. This is not to say that the steps are always on beats 1, 2 and 3 of the measure. The Break Step is important in most styles of salsa. First, the break step occurs on the same beat each measure and allows the partners to establish a connection and a common ground regarding the timing and size of steps. Some some and some disagree that Abakua, Comparsa and some times even Mozambique influenced Salsa dancing

Cuban dancing may not look as showy as other types of Salsa dancing. Influences are Ladies's Styling, additional men's leading techniques and styling, shines, music appreciation and transposing from Salsa On2 to Salsa On1 or Cuban Salsa. With the influx of Puerto Rican and Cuban immigrants in America since the 1950's, a unique Afro-Caribbean diaspora was in play. Cubans with enough passion and determination can reach high feats in salsa dancing because of there natural movement and feel for the music.

Typically the music involves complex African percussion rhythms based around the Son clave or Rumba clave. The bass pattern often follows a distinct salsa rhythm pattern known as the tumbao which alternates between the fifth and the root of a chord. One side of the tumbao will be in near unison with the clave, while the other side is syncopated against the clave Bass tumbao rhythm1.

Salsa dancing is one of the most popular dances worldwide, and because the rules of the dance allow for a lot of creative improvisation, many different styles have developed. Salsa dancing could be an activity that would provide multiple benefits to their health and sense of well being.
