What You Should Know About Shade Sails

Mar 28, 2008
Shade sails are gaining popularity across the UK. They have a really strong fan based in the United States and in Australia. This is mainly because of the favourable climate in these areas of the world but it is also because there is a greater knowledge of what the shade sail is sand what they can do for the people that buy them and the spaces in which they are used. They offer a great source of shade for an outdoor space. They are a stylish and semi permanent alternative to gazebos and retractable awnings. The history of these types of shade devices dates back thousands of years.

The first time that a sails were used for shade is reported to have been in ancient Greek and Roman times. One example of this is when sailors would use their sails to offer shade from the sun when they landed in a port on a beach. The roman coliseum was also covered in a large sail so that the spectators that attended the venue to see the gladiatorial battles and the events that took place there were given protection from the searing heat of the sun. This meant that the people that attended were a lot more comfortable. This concept is very simple but the types of fabrics that are utilised have improved greatly in the following years. They have now reached incredible levels of sophistication and the quality of shade offered by modern shade sails is better than ever.

The new fabrics that have been developed over this time have made sail shades lighter and more durable so that they can be erected in a wide variety of places. The shade sail is different to other types of shade devices that are common in that it is often arranged to be a semi-permanent structure. That is to say that they are fixed to permanent fixtures and can be taken down when they are not needed for example in the winter when there is less sun. But the shade is permanently erect and does not need to be put away at night or taken down in the rain. Because they are attached to permanent fixtures they can be arranged over a number of different levels and as a result it can provide and extremely striking and stylish option for your outdoor space.

The sail shade comes in a variety of different shapes and sizes. Many shade sail companies will produce a product specifically for your space. This bespoke service gives you a stylish form of shade that exactly matches the needs of your company. They also provide a wide variety of shades that can be bought off the shelf. Most shades come in two shapes. They are either square or triangle. When the points of these sails are attached to points at different heights it produces a beautiful curved effect that complements all outside spaces. These pre-made sails are slightly less expensive than the bespoke versions.

The quality of the sail shade is entirely dependent on the supplier and manufacturer that you choose. There is no legislative body that manages the manufacturing of sail shades so as a result the quality that you find can be extremely varied. It is important to find a well respected company and carefully check the quality of the fabric that they produce before you buy.
