Shih Tzu Care

Mar 31, 2008
Shih Tzu allergies are as common as other diseases that effect both dogs and humans. In fact, both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu owners may suffer from some common diseases such as diabetes, cardiac problems, obesity and many others. And Shih Tzu allergies may occur more or less in the same way as with human.

Although diseases like diabetes, cardiac problems or obesity may stem from unhealthy dietary and physical activity management, allergies may occur from many different types of allergens.

Shih Tzu dogs exhibiting allergies occurring in the respiratory tract may lead to sneezing, wheezing and coughing, which is very similar to the human experience. Moreover, they may have a runny nose and eyes like with a cold or the flu. When the allergies strike in the digestive system, the concerned Shih Tzu may experience diarrhea, watery stools and vomiting.

In fact, there is a great similarity between the symptoms occurring in both humans and Shih Tzu dogs. Nose and eyes discharge frequently just like with a cold or the flu. Allergies may affect the digestive system also. If so, Shih Tzu may exhibit symptoms like vomiting, watery stools or diarrhea.

In practice, there is a great variety of allergies that may affect the Shih Tzu. For instance, flea saliva may cause the Shih Tzu an allergic reaction. In order to understand whether a Shih Tzu is being affected by flea saliva a skin allergy examination is essential. In the case of a positive result, the owner must use an effective flea control program. But using safe products must be ensured in order to avoid any possible harm to the dog.

The Shih Tzu may develop allergies to food also. Beef, fish, eggs, soy products, wheat, chemical preservatives and artificial sweeteners often cause a food allergy to develop in a Shih Tzu. It is always advised that the Shih Tzu be fed with commercial dog foods instead of homemade food products in order to keep it healthy and protected from any possible food related allergies..

Molds and dust mites, the most common forms of environmental substances, may also lead to the development of allergic reaction in the Shih Tzu. These types of Shih Tzu allergies occur due to a hypersensitivity to the immune system in the presence of these substances. The condition is known as atopic dermatitis. It becomes evident that the dog is suffering from atopic dermatitis when you find them licking and chewing different areas of the body including the paws, abdomen and rear feet. Atopic dermatitis may strike areas like the armpit, central areas of the toes of the paws and the groin.

Shih Tzus may become allergic due to a bacterial infection. This can seriously affect the health of a Shih Tzu. Typically, the Shih Tzu has certain types of bacteria over their skin, while most of them are harmless to them. These bacteria belong to Staphylococcus family. However, there are certain other types that cause allergies to them. The most common symptoms of bacterial allergy are hair loss and the formation of marks resembling ringworm in the affected skin area. Statistically, it is estimated that over twenty percent of the dog population in the United States are affected by allergic reactions.
