Coping with Panic Attacks with the Right Medication

Apr 1, 2008
If you have been diagnosed with having a suffered a panic attack and it's not a symptom of something more concerning condition, you need to start thinking about two choices: behavior-cognitive therapy and/or prescription drugs.

You will learn a lot about negative thinking and replacing it with positive thoughts while even mastering breathing techniques that will aid you in stopping panic attacks from happening with therapy.

The problem is that it takes time to master and there is a big chance you will suffer from more panic attacks before you actually get to learn how to stop them from happening. This is where the right medication kicks in.

During the period of drug taking you should also get involved in different stress relieving activities including yoga, tai chi, individual sports and you can also attend the classes of anger management courses, basically anything that can train you in dealing with worries and anxiety.

You also should be aware that the panic attack medication needs to be prescribed by a doctor. Usually you would take drugs like Prozac, Paxil or Zoloft, which are commonly known as SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors).

They are helpful as they assist the patient having control over the panic attack and there are many situations in which individuals can learn how to fight different triggers while on such medication. This kind of success can eventually lead to the panic attack cycle disappearing and you could end up having to quit medication because you are of panic attack free and have learnt how to deal with them.

The doctor can also prescribe more serious drugs while the patient is learning on how to manage panic attacks and limited use of Valium or Xanax (two common benzodiazepines) might be needed.

It is vitally important to understand that these or any kind of drugs must not be abused as they can quickly become addictive and one should only take them in cases of emergency and not for long periods of time.

The real problem stands in the fact that many individuals tend to use illegal drugs or alcohol as means of dealing with panic attacks. This can only lead to dependency to those medications and alcohol and would bring another problem that needs to be treated. Why go through all of this trouble when by combining the right medication prescribed by a specialist and relaxation techniques you can get results and deal with panic attacks?
