Explanations at the Maryland Science Center

Apr 1, 2008
Are you the parent of one of those children that are consistently asking how this works or what makes that thing go? These seemingly never ending questions can sometimes get on your nerves, but then, you have to consider that this is all part of the learning process and that the more inquisitive children seem to be the ones that grow up to be scientists and other very intelligent people. If this is a valid description of your child, why not let that sense of curiosity grow into something that someday may just change the world. If you live in the area of Baltimore in Maryland or plan on going there for your next family vacation, then you can feed that curiosity at the Maryland Science Center. This is the perfect place for your little one to get his or her questions answered and to maybe learn a little yourself. It's always good to be able to have a valid answer to at least a few of your child's "how does this work" questions.

The Maryland Science Center has a massive amount of both hands on and visual exhibits for the entire family, children and adults alike. Take the Dinosaur Mysteries exhibits. This one not only feeds your children's visual curiosity, but also answers a lot of those seemingly unanswerable questions. You and your kids will gaze with wide-eyed wonder at giant skeletons of tyrannosaurus Rex's and life-sized reproductions of many types of prehistoric creatures. For the kids, there are plenty of hands on exhibits here. They can sit in the nest of a pterodactyl or stand in the footprint of a dinosaur and get their picture taken.

For some serious kids fun, there is the Newton's Alley exhibit. Be warned, however, as this particular area will undoubtedly resort in you being nailed with a barrage of "How does this work" questions. Here your children will have a hand's on experience with dozens of contraptions that are almost unexplainable, such as the lift where the child sits in a chair and pulls him or herself up using a rope. Fortunately, there are staff members and literature available that actually explain the workings of the various gadgets, saving you from having to make up something at the drop of a hat. Your children will learn a variety of lessons here and have fun doing it. The ironic thing is that much of what they will learn, the parent's themselves do not even know.

There are endless other exhibits here, such as the Fossil Quest, the Traveling Exhibit, and the ever popular Kids Room exhibit. On top of that, there are big screen shows for them to watch such as the Demo Stage and Science on a Sphere. The list goes on and on. Though the constant nagging of endless questions that you cannot answer can be very frustrating, hang in there and nurture your children's curiosity by taking them to great and fun learning institutions, such as the Maryland Science Center.
