Cold Sore Relief - Comforting Relief From Your Cold Sores

Apr 1, 2008
Cold sore relief can mean a couple things. Fast healing of a present sore, or prevention of future outbreaks. Whatever you are searching for, this quick article will give you the cold sore relief you seek.

Cold sore relief is on the minds of millions of sufferers at any given time. Some treatments are quick, easy and work great. But there are many remedies that are a big waste of money when you need cold sore relief.

Please do not waste any more money before you try these simple, proven tactics for relief of your cold sores.

Do you need cold sore relief for a painful sore right now?

If so, you first need to eliminate, or at least reduce, that stinging pain. Then you want to get rid of your sore as quickly as possible.

Cold sores are created by destruction of cells on the end of surface nerves. This becomes a battle between your body defenses and the herpes virus. It usually creates swelling, mild fever, headaches, and swollen lymph glands under the jaw.

A headache and fever reducing remedy is certainly in order at this point. Many people use aspirin or similar products for initial cold sore relief. This gives some success in reducing the discomfort.

Applying ice, or other cold object, to the sore quickly relieves pain and reduces swelling. Besides providing blessed comfort, ice can slow down, or prevent, the herpes virus from doing any more damage.

Ice is great for cold sore relief, but not always convenient to use - such as at work, driving or shopping.

When the use of ice is not convenient for you, you may want to try a drug store comfort remedy for cold sores. Choose salves that offer pain deadening benzocaine or lidocaine.

Treatments such as these will give excellent cold sore relief from the stinging pain by deadening the nerves in the area. Many of these products also contain ingredients to prevent further infection.

Keep in mind, however, that most of these products only provide comfort and do not speed healing of the sore. They often make big claims, but so far have not proven to actually shorten the duration of an outbreak.

Ice is probably one of the best remedies for stopping pain and reducing swelling and fever. But, once your sore blossoms open, your sore begins the healing stage. And ice will slow down this process. Cold drives healing blood away from the wound.

Applying warmth during the healing period will give you the best cold sore relief by helping to cure the outbreak fast.

A hot wash cloth will work fine. However, many people find a warm tea bag works better. There are some powerful healing nutrients in the tea that provide great cold sore relief.

During the healing process, it is important to continually cleanse the sore with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. And, when it crusts over, keep the scab well oiled with olive oil to keep it soft and pliable. This will help prevent painful cracking.

Once your sore is healed, you will want to take steps to prevent, or reduce, future outbreaks of cold sores.

Nearly a third of those who are infected with the herpes virus never get an outbreak because their immunity is strong. If you get multiple cold sores, you should strongly consider the following remedy.

People who get re-occurring cold sores often are found to be deficient in certain nutrients - particularly calcium. A good daily vitamin regimen could prevent this.

Do not buy grocery store vitamins - the one or two per day variety. Go to a good vitamin store or go on-line. A good, complete formula will require at least four to six capsules per day to provide the proper quantities of essential nutrients.

The nutrients that will benefit you the most in preventing cold sores are zinc, calcium, magnesium, beta-carotene, the B vitamins, and vitamins C and E.

Dealing with existing cold sores calls for the application of ice at the start, and then warm tea bags during the healing phase. Continuous cleansing of the sore with alcohol will speed healing also. Keep the crust well oiled for additional comfort.

If you want to prevent future cold sores, you must improve your immunity. Making proper food choices is a start. And, maybe, a high quality vitamin and mineral program is all you will need for a lifetime of cold sore relief.
