Which Digital Camera Do I Need?

Apr 2, 2008
Shopping for a new digital camera can become overwhelming when trying to decide what model and make digital camera to buy. There are a wide variety of models available for the novice photographer as well as the more serious and professional photographer. The question is whether to go with ultra compact, compact, or a digital DSLR camera. You can take any camera and take photos of people or objects, but some models are better equipped for specific kinds of photography. Many cameras offer special effects, movies, and sometimes even with sound. The higher resolutions and more advanced controls of today's digital cameras make it easier than ever to take great photos. If you plan on taking photos out in the rain, snow, or other inclement weather you may wish to invest in a weatherproof digital camera just for these instances.

First, consider what you will bee using your camera for. For the occasional photographer a compact point and shoot digital camera would be a good choice. For the more serious photographer the higher-end DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera would be the best option.

Ultra Compact Digital Camera:

Ultra Compact digital cameras can easily fit in a persons pocket or purse, making them popular for someone on the go who like having a camera ready when they need it. Ultra compact digital cameras weigh less than 6 ounces and about 1" thick. Most have a wide-angle lens, image stabilization, auto-focus, in-camera editing functions, built-in flash, great image quality, and many more features. The ultra compact camera is ideal for you to take skiing, snowboarding, or to the beach

Compact Digital Cameras:

Compact digital cameras are designed to be small, portable, and generally easy to use. If you're just getting into photography and want a digital camera that you can learn and experiment with, without being overwhelmed, there are a wide range of compact digital camera makes and models that will fulfill your need. Many of the compact cameras have advanced optical and digital imaging technology that let you capture and share stunning images with incredible ease. Many of today's compact models feature high resolutions with features like large color screens, high sensitivities and respectable movie modes. Most compact digital cameras have built-in flash, macro capability with user-friendly functions. Many compacts offer manual modes, but with most of them you are limited in what they'll let you do.

DSLR Digital Camera:

DSLR digital cameras are good for taking action pictures such as sports or pets running around. The startup and response time is much quicker than a compact. DSLRs have larger sensors than compacts do, which means much better picture quality when taking pictures in low light conditions. Most DSLRs have multiple settings and various features like the ability to use aperture and shutter priority, auto or manual focus etc One key advantage of DSLRs is the ability to change lenses. DSLR cameras are usually larger and heavier than compact models. The array of settings and features may be overwhelming at first.

For the average picture taker a 2 to 5 mega pixel should be sufficient for producing quality pictures that will be satisfactory.
