Credit Card Kiosk Secrets

Apr 3, 2008
If you're currently going to college, I'm sure you're quite aware of all the marketing that surrounds you. One of the biggest marketers on college campuses are credit card companies. From kiosks to sponsoring events, it's quite hard to get away from the companies. Before you apply for a credit card at one of those kiosks, make sure that you know of the hidden secrets that come along with it.

I know it's tempting not to stop at a kiosk when they are giving away a free burrito at the local taco bell but you have to remember that no t only are you giving away your information, you're probably starting up your credit history and this isn't something you want to mess around with for a free burrito. Sure, there can be credit cards that may appeal to you but let me explain why you shouldn't apply in person.

If you even look at kiosk up close, you'll notice that you have to fill out all of your information on a piece of paper. If a thief ever got a hold of these papers, they could do a lot of damage to your identity. Experts say that the best way to apply for a credit card is online because you're able to do it via a secured application that is sent directly to the credit card companies itself. You'll also want to stay from direct mailings and any other form that isn't sent directly to the credit card company itself.

One of the biggest reasons you'll want to avoid the kiosk is because of the selection. When you apply for a credit card at a kiosk, you're only open to one credit card and when it comes to cards. This card that you apply for may not even have the rewards that work for you. The nice thing about applying online is you're open up to more companies and rewards. This way you'll be able to get a view on every card available and you'll be able to see what would work best for you.

Most kiosks are run by major corporations and while the credit cards are legit, don't let the free things fool you. Everyone in America loves free things and credit card companies capitalize off of this. If you do by chance find a kiosk at your college and the card looks legit, the companies tend to stay around for a couple days or even the remainder of the day. The best thing to do is go to a computer really quick and research other cards available. If you find that the card you saw best suits you, I would say go apply for it and grab your free gift but most of the times, you'll find a better card.

In the long run, kiosks aren't bad, sometimes you just have to worry about your credit and the security of your application. Don't let a free item influence you to sign up for a credit card. Do your research and pick the card that will work best for you.
