Discount Appliances: Tips for Saving Money on Major Appliances

Buying a major appliance can be a major hit to your wallet if you don't plan carefully, and it's a tricky area. If you spend too little, you could end up with a unit that doesn't work well and needs constant repairs. But you don't want to pay too much for a good dishwasher, refrigerator, washer or dryer. Instead of breaking the bank with your appliance purchase, follow these simple steps to get the best deal no matter what kind of appliance you're buying.

Before you start shopping, you need to create a budget. Instead of picking a specific dollar amount for your purchase, though, come up with a range that you're willing or able to pay for your appliance. It's best to decide on your budget before you go shopping so you won't be tempted to pay more than you can afford.

Make a list of your "must-have" features and ones that you can live without. Do you need an ice maker in your refrigerator? Do you need to have a moisture sensor in your dryer? Compromise on the features that you don't need, and you'll be able to lower your price.

You can start by looking at the most basic model of the appliance you are shopping for. You may also save be able to save some money by considering the previous year's model. (If you purchase an older model, make sure to ask whether the guarantee would still be in effect, as well whether replacement parts would still be readily available).

It will really pay off to do some research before you go shopping to find your favorite brands. Ask for recommendations from friends and family. Find out what they like best or worst about their appliances. Do some searching online, and check out the Consumer Reports magazine or website. This way you can compare warranties and other important features before you even get to the store.

You can save even more money by trying to find an energy efficient model. These brands and models will save you money in the long run because they will use less energy. If it comes down to paying a little more for an energy efficient model, it may make sense to make your budget stretch on the initial purchase. Not only will you save on your own energy costs, you can feel good that your purchase helping to converse natural resources.

Once you've selected your preferred brand, watch for sales in the circulars and on television. Keep your eye out for discounts, sales, or online coupon codes for the model you want or something comparable.

Finally, you need to investigate the warranty on your purchase. A good warranty can save you money, and is worth getting even if you have to pay a little more. Ask how long the warranty lasts and if there are any terms in the fine print that will cost you for repairs or parts.

Major appliances can make life so much easier. Take a little bit of extra time to make sure you choose the one that's right for you, your family, and your budget.
