Do You Use Your Grace Periods?

Apr 5, 2008
When you have payments that you have to make on a monthly basis, you know how distressing it can be to always wonder if you are going to be able to meet the payment due date on time. We do our best to schedule and budget to make sure we are not late on anything because it is all too easy these days to affect our credit score with only one or two late payments.

Our credit score is vitally important when it comes to being able to borrow any more money from a bank, applying for credit cards, or buying a home or vehicle through any other money loaning establishment. The only way to make sure that we keep our good credit score in tact is by making as many payments to anyone we owe on time.

There are places that report to the credit bureaus now that may not have in the past. Even the companies that supply our utilities may report late payments. This is something that you should find out right from the beginning. You need to know what places report late payments and which ones do not.

In the majority of cases you will not be charged a late charge and it be reported to the credit bureaus until you have gone over your grace period date. A lot of people might not take advantage of the time allotted to them by a grace period. It is perfectly alright to use this extra time as long as you do not go past the allotted time. Of course, it is always better to pay any payment you owe to anyone on the exact date it is due, but many times when there are circumstances beyond your control, you might not have a choice.

It is good to know that you are able to use these grace periods without it affecting your credit score, but the best thing to do is not get into the habit of using them unless it is absolutely necessary. Waiting to pay things until the last possible minute might be a necessity sometimes, but this is when you run the risk of a situation coming up about that time that might cause you to be late.

Protecting our credit is not that difficult when our finances cooperate with us. The easiest way to prevent bad credit is to not overload our budget in the first place. This is what many of us are finding out the hard way. The bottom line is if you do not have to borrow, just do not do it.
