Donovanosis Infection Is Painless But Utterly Destructive

Apr 5, 2008
This STD which is otherwise known as inguinal granuloma is a bacterial disease that is rampant in third world countries. Generally, these countries have inadequate medical treatment, so that the disease goes untreated and sometimes just disappears. Sores develop around the genital area, which could sometimes be mistaken for syphilis. At the final stages of the infection, blood and mucus will ensue from the wound, which is set off by the destruction of external and internal tissue. Because it is an open wound, it can be extremely susceptible to other infections.

Granuloma inguinal or donovanosis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacteria Calymmatobacterium or Klebsiella granulomatis. Donovanosis is named after its researcher, Donovan who discovered the Donovan bodies referring to the lesions that contain the bacteria. The occurrence of Donovan bodies is an indication of being infected with Donovanosis.

The causative agent of this disease is a bacterium shaped like a hood or a veil located inside the wounds.

The symptoms of the disease do not appear right after exposure to the bacterium. Incubation period is from the tenth to the fortieth day, which could start as pain-free raised nodules which will then evolve to open fleshy wounds that give off discharges. The infection can spread and destroy the infected tissue. The areas often affected are the typical areas of contact, such as the penis shaft, labia, perinal or perianal. On some occasions, it can also occur on the cervix or vaginal walls.

The infection can be transmitted through having contact with the open sores, thus all types of sexual intercourse would greatly promote the spread of the bacteria and should therefore be avoided.

When you suspect a STD and go to the doctor's, you must be ready to present him your sexual history. If you go to a professional doctor, he is able to detect Donovanosis only by the ulcers type. Nevertheless, a tissue sample may be necessary for correct diagnose. A special substance can help the laboratory worker view the cells better. Besides, the sample should include Donovan bodies.

This disease can be treated with antibiotics and in general, it can be cured in about 12 weeks. If you notice that after one week the infection starts to subside, you must not interrupt treatment, because it can as well relapse.

Progressive countries rarely reports cases of Donovanosis. If it does, it is usually brought on by a person who had a sexual relationship with an infected person while travelling abroad. Regardless if it is a serious romantic involvement or a fling with a person from a region where the disease is widespread, one has to treat it as his moral responsibility to undergo STD tests to promptly prevent the disease from spreading to innocent people.
