6 Tips To Overcome Writer's Block

Apr 6, 2008
Do you suffer from writer's block and what is it?

Oh boy! I've got to get this article finished and I have absolutely nothing to write. It just won't come.

Do you have this challenge from time to time or even all the time? I don't want this but it just happens and it stops me dead in my tracks! It's that terrifying experience of.....

WRITER'S BLOCK!!!

Uhhg! I strain and strain and I still can't get anything out on my head and onto that darn page.

Writer's block can make anyone just want to go mad. You really want to write, but you just can't get it from your mind to the paper. It just gets to be a huge waste of time.

Your stomach ties up in knots as you stress out about your dilemma. If you force it, it just gets worse. Even smacking yourself upside the head a couple times doesn't snap you out of it.

So how does this terrifying inability to write come to pass?

One reason could be fear. You're so stressed when it comes to writing, that you just turn off. Maybe you think you don't have anything worth putting down on paper or you could just fear having writer's block itself.

Writer's block can happen to anyone in any situation. You may think you have to have a masterpiece or you will get picked apart by all the critics out there waiting to pounce on your next article.

Here are some ideas that you can put to use to overcome writer's block once and for all.

I am here to tell you that WRITER'S BLOCK CAN BE OVERCOME.

Please, remain seated.

[1] Know your topic. If you prepare properly and really know your subject, you will likely have a lot to write about. Research will not only prepare you to write, but will bring you confidence. You'll know what you're talking about and it will come out.

[2] Forget about being perfect. Just sit down and write whatever comes to mind. Really! Don't stop to think if it makes sense or not. Write down every thought that comes to mind in any order. Just get it out of your head and on to your paper. You don't have to care about your drafts. That's what they are for, the journey to the final piece. You'll be surprised at the thoughts that come out, because you didn't judge it as being worthy or not worthy to be written down.

[3] Don't edit while you are writing. This goes hand in hand with the last tip. Just let the thoughts flow without even focusing on any writing structure. Forget the spelling, grammar, sentence structure, etc. The idea is to write down your thoughts without any thought to the correctness of it. You can structure it later after you have the thoughts down on paper. Write like you are talking to a friend at a coffee shop. Just having a casual conversation.

[4] Forget about the first sentence. Overcome writer's block by writing down what comes to mind in any order. If you have a lot to talk about and it happens to be the end of the article, start with that first. No need for order. Again the idea is to just get it out and put it into sequence later. As you do this, you'll activate you mind and you'll start getting all the information coming out .

[5] Act as if. If you want to be a confident writer without a problem with writer's block, then act as if you are that great writer. There's a lot of power in this state of mind. Just do it and you'll be amazed at what you come up with.

[6] As the old Nike slogan says, "Just do it!" Stop procrastinating right now. Keep your notes close by and start writing. Use the ideas others have had on the subject as a way to get your thoughts going. Remember, there really isn't anything original. Of course you never want to copy someone word for word because thats called plagiarism and illegal. It is very acceptable to take the many ideas of others and put those ideas into your own words, adding your own experiences and writing style and voila you have an original piece of work

To summarize, you can get over your writer's block. You might not think your writing is the greatest, but don't let that stop you. There's always those out there that will learn from you and will appreciate what you're writing. The more you write the better you'll get, so just keep going and you will even surprise yourself.
