Knowing More About Syphilis Can Save Your Life

Apr 6, 2008
All of us can be exposed to this infection one way or the other. In whatever field of work we are, we can be exposed to this disease in so many ways and get it from so many places. This dreadful disease comes from the bacteria Treponema Pallidum.

Syphilis is commonly transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person. Still, one can get it from other means such as kissing or biting or by being in contact with objects or items that have been contaminated.

Direct contact with body fluids from an infected individual puts the healthy person at high risk of being infected. Anybody who comes in direct contact with any body fluids secreted by an infected person, such as the saliva, blood, vaginal and seminal discharges are likely to contract the disease. Pregnant women can also infect their newborn baby.

There will be no immediate noticeable effect after the exposure. The bacteria can have a very inconspicuous beginning with no observable symptoms. But if it remains untreated and allowed to develop, the infected person can have a very exhausting and agonizing experience as the disease slowly progresses to its various stages, leaving its host physically, mentally and emotionally damaged.

The first indication of syphilis infection is the appearance of one skin lesion. It could be round or oblong in shape, firm and painless. Swelling of the lymph glands could also be a sign of infection. Additionally, here will be swelling in the penis, vulva, and anal area.

During the secondary phase of the syphilis, other characteristic manifestations take place. It is the eruption on the skin at the skinlevel, which spreads all over the body. Small red blisters form on the skin, meaning around the mouth area, on the palms of the hand or on the foot sole. These symptoms will disappear even without treatment but the infection will not. The infected individual may ignore or not pay attention to the symptoms mentioned above but the infection will stay inside the organism and will evolve surely and slowly.

In syphilis infection even when the indications for primary and secondary infection disappear even without undergoing treatment, it does not mean that the disease has been cured. The bacteria are inside the body and continuously evolving towards the next phase. The growth period can last up to 90 days and all this time there could be no noticeable symptoms. The primary and secondary phase of syphilis could be considered the "easy" stages compared to what the patient will go through as the infection enters the latent stage.

The latency state can take several years and the symptoms are not present in any way. Depending on the individual, the "late syphilis period" starts after five to twenty years from the contaminating contact, weather it was of sexual nature or not. The pathogen agent invades the organism, and the destructions will be visible at all the levels of the organism. The heart, the bones, internal organs, nervous system, they will all be affected by the bacteria.
