Will Cheap Saunas Prove Their Worth?

By Charlie Cory

Cheap saunas do not necessarily mean that they are made cheaply. You may well be able to pick up a top quality sauna on an auction site like Ebay for example, which might be cheap but will be excellent value for money. Good luck to you if you can find one like that, because that would be a real bargain.

What we are talking about here, are not bargains, but cheap in terms of price and cheap in terms of quality.

The authorities in Canada, namely The Electrical Safety Authority (The ESA) have done some investigating into cheap sauna imports and have come to some worrying conclusions. Amongst other things they discovered a lack of temperature limit control, which, when combined with highly flammable wood material used in the construction, produces a dangerous sauna. Open wiring and open wiring connections behind the sauna walls and the use of unapproved electrical heater further compound the problem.

These tests were carried out on certain imported cheap saunas, and whilst not necessarily indicative of all inexpensive saunas, it does suggest that great caution be taken when looking into buying one of the cheaper models on the market, especially if the sauna is imported.

The wood that saunas are usually made from, at least historically and in the case of the high quality saunas, is cedar. Apart from being soft and generally resistant to cracking, especially useful in a sauna here the continual raising and dropping of temperature will put the best materials to the test, cedar wood is naturally anti-fungal and anti-bacterial owing to the unique properties of the cedar oil. This is especially important in the sauna where bodies, moisture and heat combine to make the environment perfect for moulds and bacteria. From an aesthetic point of view, cedar wood is one of the most beautiful woods available ranging from a very light honey to a deep walnut shade.

So ask yourself if the sauna materials will it stand up to the stresses that it will be put under in terms of its use as a sauna? Will the temperature changes affect the wood adversely or not?

In many cases, cheaply manufactured saunas will use cheap soft wood. It may look nice to start with, but not all soft wood is suitable for the extreme conditions to which they are being subjected. Do your research.
