Why do I need life insurance?

Apr 6, 2008
With the highlight these days on healthier living, the drive in our personal lifestyle is focused on staying in shape, eating a proper diet and keeping fit and with this in mind the question we may ask ourselves may be "why would I need life insurance?"

You have absolutely no idea what is around the next bend or over the next hill in life, anymore than you know what danger is around the next curve or over the next steep grade on the highway. Most people have absolutely no qualms about insuring the car, because what would happen if you wrecked it? You'd get the insurance money and get a new car.

Of course a life insurance policy isn't going to provide you with a new life! It will, however, insure that your family and loved ones can go on living their lives comfortably after you have gone. Should the unexpected happen to you, at least you know that the people you love and work hard every day to provide for are able to go on with one less thing to worry about.

No, it is absolutely not anything that anyone wants to think about, but it certainly is something that any responsible adult will take time out to take care of, if they truly love the people they care the most for. Losing a loved one is difficult enough when things go smoothly. But on top of funeral arrangements and coping with that loss, think how much more difficult it would be for the person surviving if they also had to think about how they were going to make it through the emotional stress and, on top of that, manage to pay the bills and keep the remainder of the surviving family unit afloat and away from the wolves that might otherwise soon be at the door.

Now you might think that because you have some money in the bank that this will be adequate should the unforeseen occur but it may surprise you just how quickly that money may be eaten into and dwindle as your loved ones pick up the pieces. That is why it is so important to look into the idea of life insurance while you have the time to do so.

The fact that you are happily married and have a young family might very well make the idea of dwelling on death too morose. It is exactly due to your situation that you should consider it. These are the very people that you love and want to be with and you have to consider how they would cope if you were not there anymore.

Disasters, emergencies and tragic events generally don't let you know they are going to happen. They come out of the blue, there is never a good time for them to happen and they can be devastating. Fit, healthy and happy people are killed in car crashes and train wrecks every day, and you can guarantee they weren't planning on that day's particular chain of events. Usually the best we can hope for in an emergency is that luck will be on our side. It is, however, considerably wiser to provide for the financial outcomes of life's disasters by taking out protection for your life in the form of a good life insurance policy.

You've heard the expression that states that a good offence begins with a good defense. When it comes to defending yourself against the financial devastation that an unexpected death can cause, taking out a life insurance policy is not just good defense, it is the only form of effective defense there is.

Now the main focus of this article so far has concerned couples and families with mortgages and the responsibilites that these situations entail. But what if you are a young single person who is living life to the full and whose only responsibility is covering the rent on your apartment and making sure your monthly bills are covered? Where could you possibly fit into all this? Well loved ones aren't just those who you marry and have children with but those who have brought you into this world and looked after you. Would you want to burden them with the financial demands of your passing along with the grief that it would entail?

Only you can decide if you need life insurance. After all, it isn't compulsory. But I think that if you give it a moment's real thought, and think about the people you would be leaving behind, you will see that there aren't many people in this day and age who wouldn't be doing someone a favour by insuring their life.
