Don't Let Time Get Away From You

Apr 7, 2008
Our days fly by so quickly that without a plan, it is easy to lose the value of them completely. All of the tasks we need to complete are easily neglected for things that pop up and grab our attention. When this happens too often, we are allowing the day to control us, when to be effective and successful we need to be in control of our days.

Who wants to run around reacting to situations and putting out fires when being in charge and orchestrating life's events will lead to more productivity and less stress? To take control of your day and achieve the most out of your life, you need to practice time management, which is one of the simplest forms of self help.

When you "participate" in your day, you are more efficient, less prone to stress, and caught up on tasks, leaving more time for leisure. The self help key to participating in your life is time management.

Set times to start and finish your projects so that one task doesn't hijack your whole day. Divide big tasks into a series of smaller ones to be completed in increments.

This will allow the eventual completion of the big project, as well as attention to all other matters of the day. Perhaps most importantly, you need to create routines. Your day planning itself should be a routine, as should all your small recurring tasks such as managing email, reading the news, and project implementation.

No matter how well we plan our days, though, there are things that pop up and try to distract us. That's okay, let them. They are usually very small and can be handled in a matter of minutes, so handle them.

We have many pitfalls in our day that work against our time management efforts. We tend to spend too much time contemplating the start of a new project and often avoiding it. So just start it. Then finish it. It is bad practice to pick it up, think about it and put it aside for later only to repeat the process again in an hour.

We dread it so we focus on it for a minute, while not really taking any action, then put it aside to waste more of our time later. You know it has to get done, and you will eventually have to deal with it, so either tackle it at the moment or put it aside for a scheduled later time. Then do not think about it again until it is time to work on it.
