Risks Of Using Laxatives As A Weight Loss Cure

Apr 8, 2008
One common weight loss supplements for sale in the market nowadays take the form of tea. Shops everywhere distribute slimming tea, dieter's tea and others but every one of them is the same. They might seem to be effective, but what is not seen might in reality hurt you.

One of the consequences of consuming dieter's tea is frequent bowel movement. This gives dieters the false sensing of body cleansing. By drinking such teas, although it may cause toxins to come out of body, there are still other effects which the slimming tea actually makes to the body. Slimming tea contains herbs which are natural laxatives. Some of these laxatives include aloe, senna, rhubarb root, cascara, buckthorn and castor oil. All these products which are derived from plants. They are used since ancient times because of their potency in treating constipation as well as to inducing bowel movement.

Cascara, castor oil and senna are popular as laxatives and are easily available over the counter. They are also regulated as drugs. There are also some scientific studies that show such induced diarrhea by laxatives cause the body not to absorb significant amounts of calories.

The cause for this is that laxatives do not act on the small intestines. This is the place in the body where most of the calories are absorbed. They work basically on the large intestines. If taken in big quantities for lengthy periods, it can affect fat absorption in the body. The end result may lead to oily diarrhea and an eventual loss of weight. However, misuse of laxatives is common amongst many people who suffer from bulimia and anorexia nervosa.

While weight loss can be assured of by just overdosing on laxatives, the side effect is that it may also cause damage if not permanent to the gastrointesitinal tract. Besides it may cause the weakening and softening of the bones, a condition called osteomalacia.

Users of slimming teas are more likely to be drawn to such products, simply because they are low-dollar and taste better than other laxatives sold in the market. For those with eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia nervosa, they drink dieter's tea because they work double-quick and bring forth watery stool as well as having loose consistency.

Most women may even be more vulnerable to the consequences of slimming teas. Though they are not known to interfere directly with the woman's menstrual cycle and fertility, they should look out if consuming such teas causes a rapid shed off of weight. They are also not safe for pregnant women. Informed and responsible herbalists also warn the use of senna and other herbal products with laxative attributes for pregnant women and women who are trying to conceive.

Everyone ought to be be wary about such claims because the labeling on packages of slimming teas in the market today can be utterly misleading. For example, they normally refer to the laxative qualities as "natural bowel cleansing properties". They often avoid using specifically the word "laxative". A few even apply the term "low-calorie" on their labeling. These products as a matter of fact, bear essentially no calories nor nutrients whatsoever. Unless of course, if they are sugared or added with vitamins or minerals.

Harmful effects of misusing laxatives in the form of slimming tea generally occur when you ingested in more than or longer than recommended dosage. Side effects include nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, fainting, rectal bleeding, electrolyte disorder and dehydration. In worst case scenerios, even death. It was also reported that excessiveness use of these stimulant laxatives cause severe constipation and pain for very long periods ( sometimes as much as for decades). This is due to the colon losing its function and this may eventually led to surgery removing the colon altogether.
