Electric Pallet Stacker: Handle With Caution

Apr 8, 2008
Pallet jacks serve a useful purpose for moving multiple and heavy amounts of material or loads. After all the ability to move multiple amounts of material around can save on time as well as physical exertion. The downside though is that pallet jacks are not meant for lifting extremely large, cumbersome pallets around. Strain is still put on the worker when a pallet jack is used in an attempt to lift extremely large and cumbersome pallets up high for stacking. To ease the strain on the worker in situations such as these, an electric pallet stacker should be used.

Avoid Worker Injury

This equipment is made to withstand the pressure of a load's weight while being lifted up high without placing strain on the person operating the equipment. Remember that Worker's Compensation is paid out by the company for any employee who is injured on the job. The strain that can be placed on a worker who is trying to lift pallets up high for stacking can result in an injury.

To prevent injury to the worker as well as save the company the fees associated with paying out Worker's Compensation, the appropriate equipment should be made available to and always used by all workers. Equipment should only be used for what it is intended to be used for.

Pallet jacks are meant to be used to move pallets around from one area to another. An electric pallet stacker is meant to be used when stacking pallets on top of each other or on to a pallet rack.

Training Is Important

While this equipment reduces the risk of injury to the operator by withstanding the worst of the load's weight, it can still cause injury if not properly used. All persons who will be operating the equipment should be trained on how to properly use the equipment prior to use.

Each brand, make and model has different functions, so to properly know how to use the equipment you should read the owner's manual. This manual is your guide to that specific brand, make and model. As with pallet jacks, each specific make and model will have a weight capacity.

All persons who operate the equipment should be aware of the weight capacity and never exceed the weight capacity. Damage to the equipment as well as personal injury can result when the weight capacity is exceeded.

Be Aware Of Blind Spots

This equipment has blind spots that limit your view of what is around the load you are lifting. It is for this reason that anytime the equipment is being used that someone else helps to spot for the person operating the equipment.

An electric pallet stacker is most likely to be used in areas where others are working. Sometimes people can get distracted and not watch where they are going and thus get in the way of the person operating the equipment. With the blind spots, they may go unnoticed until it is too late. That is why another person should be spotting for the operator. This procedure will give some added safety measures for the operation of the equipment.
