Doing your homework on gourmet coffee?

Apr 8, 2008
Have you done your homework with gourmet coffee? If not then you need to get a move on it. There is very little chance your coffee shop is going to do well if you don't know much about what it is that you sell. People aren't going to pay for coffee that is low quality and if that means they have to go some place else to get what they want they are going to do so.

Arabica and Robusta are the two main types of gourmet coffee beans. All of the variations you serve will likely be made from these two main ingredients. For those that like a light coffee that is smooth Arabica is the right choice. Those that want a darker color and a stronger taste will prefer to go with Robusta.

Arabica coffee beans have a tan color to them and they offer a very smooth taste. They also smell very delicious and that can result in people coming in off the street to try out the gourmet coffee you offer. Robusta coffee beans are much darker in color and they have a stronger flavor. For the serious coffee drinker this is the way to go.

While the taste of these types of gourmet coffee can vary, you also need to know that the quality will have many differences as well. Never skip on the quality of the gourmet coffee that you purchase. You will regret the day you decided to keep a few extra dollars in your pocket. In the end it is going to result in fewer customers being regulars at your coffee shop.

To get samples of possible gourmet coffees you can offer in your business contact a supplier. They will be willing to work with you in the hopes that you will commit to buying all of your supplies from them. Once you find a good supplier you should work to negotiate prices with them so you can save money but not sacrifice quality at all.

The way in which you mix the coffee will be important as well. It will affect the taste more than you know. Make sure you have equipment that works well to mix the right amount of coffee with the right amount of water. You always want to use clear and delicious tasting water to make gourmet coffee.

Of course the opinion that really matters when it comes to the quality of your gourmet coffee is that of the consumer. You will be able to track what they are buying and what they aren't. You can entice them to try new gourmet coffee though by having daily specials. They may try one and decide they really like it but without your promotion they would never have tried it.

Find out all you can about gourmet coffee if you are going to succeed in this business. Take your time to experiment with what is offered out there. Keep in mind that your competition is going to offer gourmet coffee as well. Do you want theirs to be ranked as better than yours by customers? If not then you need to get the ground work completed.
