The Beginning Of Lymphogranuloma Venereum

Apr 8, 2008
The limphogranuloma venerum is a sexually transmittable disease. It is an infection affecting the lymph nodes and it infects the lymphatic system too. Of course, the infection is caused by bacteria. The name of those bacteria is Chlamydia Trachomatis. These bacteria enter the human organism if they can find a break in the skin.

The virus is also able to invade the layer of epithelial cells if it enters a mucous membrane. As soon as the bacterium enters the skin, it gradually moves to the lymphatic channels. Once ensconced there, it will start to multiply. It is a rare disease, especially in Europe. Generally, the people who contract this disease are those already sick with HIV AIDS.

Three hundred forty one people have been infected with the bacteria in the United Kingdom since 2004 while 80 cases were reported in the United States. However, because it is not easy to diagnose the disease, the actual number of people infected could be higher. The disease is commonly transmitted through sexual contact. If contamination is made through sexual contact, the symptoms will appear at the skin level of the genital area.

When the infection sets in, abscesses will be formed in the genital area, confined to the lymph node level. If the bacteria's point of entry is the rectum, then the enlarged nodes will develop in the rectum. In this case, the infection is usually passed on through anal sexual contact. The disease might also infect the throat, though this is very uncommon. If it does, then the indications will appear in the neck area.

The initial stage of the disease is not violent. The primary stage is characterized by genital ulcer, and the pain is not necessarily involved. Women especially do not observe the first stage of the infection, because the initial ulceration takes place in the walls of the vagina. This stands for the primary stage in men as well. It can be healed in a few days, with the condition it is discovered in time.

The disease is signalled by the swelling of the lymph nodes, which can be painless at first. The location of the lymph nodes could also be the area of the infection which causes swelling and thinning of the skin.

As the diseases progresses to the next level, there could be development of more abscesses, strictures and death of cells and the living tissues. Complete healing is possible if the disease could be diagnosed properly and treated early. If the disease is still left untreated, it will consequently move forward to the next stage. Edema and fibrosis could develop, which are the common permanent upshot of the bacteria.
