No Smoker Can Breathe Easily

Apr 12, 2008
Laziness, procrastination, swearing, jealousy, nagging, hoarding and nail biting are all bad habits, but smoking is more than that. Yet we continue to smoke even though we're very well informed of the dangers to our health.

Most of us have at least one bad habit, sometimes more, but we forgive ourselves because we think they don't harm anyone else even though we know deep down that we should try to stop them. These often anti-social habits are frowned upon but still tolerated and forgiven.

Stop fooling yourself! Your smoking habit is dangerous to you and those around you - you are a drug addict, smoking is drug abuse!

The money you spend on smoking is wasted money, smoking is akin to poor money management, gambling or being a shopaholic. You are spending money that could be used to improve you and your family's life on unnecessary products, cigarettes, cigars, tobacco or chewing tobacco.

Most people who smoke are procrastinators - how often have you said to yourself I'll give up soon/next week/next month? Why do you put up with the nagging of your friends and family and continue with something you know is bad for you? Excuses like anger and overeating are just that... excuses as these are not necessary side effects of quitting; they are just another bad habit some people develop to replace the one they felt they "gave up".

Enough of my lecturing lets look at some of the advantages of choosing to stop smoking (think of it as choosing to act not as "giving something up"!). As I said before, one big change will be in your wallet. You will have more money to spend on things you need or want - the money will be in your pocket not in the pockets of the tobacco companies or the government.

Now to the benefits to your health. Did you know that within 20 minutes your heart rate, body temperature and blood pressure return to a normal range!

It only takes 8 hours for the carbon monoxide levels in your blood to fall back to normal and your breath to start to lose the tobacco smell. Two months after stopping, your lungs and circulation are cleaner and work more efficiently, giving you more energy and no more smoker's cough.

Within a year your odds of developing cancer are drastically reduced and the possibility of a heart attack is 50% less. In fact, after 10 years you're in no more danger of stroke or heart attack than a person who has never smoked in their life!

Finally, the social benefits to you when you choose to stop; no more having to go outside in the cold away from what everyone else is doing to have your "fix". Your friends and family or work colleagues who don't smoke will admire you for your choice to stop instead of frowning at you for smoking.

Children are great imitators, so think about which you'd prefer... your children and their children imitating your smoking habit or copying your smoke free, healthy lifestyle? Give some thought to being a positive role model for them.
