Apr 15, 2008
Many people have had to go through all the taunts and teases while growing up due to a birth defect that may have cause a sight impairment, while other may have gradually lost sight over the years from any number of possible reasons that have left them stuck wearing glasses. To many people, wearing of glasses can be an annoyance as well as cause some self esteem issues. The truth is, that for many, the need to wear glasses is no more.

It is common place now for people that have worn eyeglasses for the last 20 years to undergo laser eye surgery and no longer need the eyeglasses ever again. It makes them a whole new person.

This laser eye surgery has been around for a while, but the truth is, the longer it is around the better it gets. Some eye plans are even starting to recognize this procedure now that is has been performed enough to no longer be considered new.

Laser eye surgery is known by many names, but the one that is known the most is of course LASIK. LASIK is an acronym which actually means laser eye surgery in Latin, but lets face it, not all of us can speak Latin like the doctors. It is just easier to call laser in situ keratomileusis, laser eye surgery or LASIK.

Many people though, still inquire into what exactly laser eye surgery really is. To be honest, it is a procedure on the eyes that is done using a laser and a high-powered computer.

Basically, the concept behind having laser eye surgery is both simple as well as complex, but we will try to keep it as simple as possible here. First, upon arriving at the eye clinic that will perform the procedure, you will be given an oral anesthetic followed by a specialized eye drop that not only numbs the senses on the eyes as well as dilate the pupils. Although the pain is not really felt as per say, one would still feel some discomfort which is partly from the mechanical components that keep your eyelids open as well as from the heat that is generated from the laser itself.

After being given the anesthetics, you will have to wait for a short period of time till it starts working, then the ophthalmologist will attach the mechanical device to your eye which is known as a microkeratome and a suction cup which is actually attached to the eye. The microkeratome has a small blade which cuts your cornea and the suction cup then folds the flap that was made back so that the laser can have access to the underside of the cornea.

From there, the doctor will ask you to look at a spot and while you are looking, the laser does its work. It is actually a fast procedure and even recovery time is quick and well worth the $1,500.00 price tag in the event your insurance will not cover it.
