Wireless Routers - How To Choose The Right One

Apr 16, 2008
A Wireless router is a piece of equipment that works by routing network traffic between various networks, both wireless and wired. Wireless routers are used to construct independent local wireless networks that can communicate with each other without the need for physical wires. This article aims to help you choose the right wireless router for your particular circumstances.

Deciding which is the right wireless router for you

Although there are quite a few wireless routers available, there are 3 makes that stand out from the crowd as particularly worth looking at.

Number 1 is the Belkin wireless G router. This is a tried and tested router and not surprisingly it's one of the best selling high speed wireless routers around. The Belkin router allows you connect to your cable, DSL, or ADSL modem. It then lets you share your internet access and files.

The Belkin router is easy to setup and has several security features including WEP and WPA which will help you keep your computer secure. You'll also get 6 months free of built-in parental control, web filtering, and pop-up and spyware protection.

The next wireless router we recommend is the D-Link wireless G router. In the same way as the Belkin router, this wireless router allows you to connect a network together and share your broadband access with other computers. It will also enable you to share files or talk to friends and family over the internet.

With this router it's straightforward to protect your network from trojans and computer viruses. The D-Link router has a great set up wizard that will guide you through setting everything up, including all your connection settings from your ISP.

Lastly, we'll look at the Linksys wireless G router. The Linksys router has a great set of features, including 54 Mbps transfer rates, 24GHz frequency, an advanced set of security options including NAT technology, a DHCP server, and a built-in 4-port 10/100 Ethernet switch with auto speed sensing. It's also capable of 128-bit WEP encryption.

Although these are only 3 of the choices available, there are many other wireless routers worth looking at, especially those from Netgear. Whatever you decide, you should take the time to consider all your options. Make sure you have a list of your requirements so you can check them off against the features of each wireless router. Don't forget to set yourself a budget too.

For a beginner, choosing the right wireless router can be intimidating, but so long as you stick to the most popular models, refer to your list of requirements, and ignore most of the sales hype, you'll be Ok.

One last thing - if you can, try to purchase a wireless router which is made by the same company as your network adapter - it usually makes installation and setup much easier.
