Credit Restoration: Hire A Proffesional Or Do It Yourself?

Apr 16, 2008
If you are considering the restoration of your credit report, then you should seek the assistance of a credit restoration professional. As an alternative approach you can consider doing it yourself and follow certain self-reliant practices to make the restoration process successful. Both of these approaches have their own merits and are regarded as appropriate methods for restoring your credit report.

When it comes to hiring a professional to help restore your credit, it seems to be a good option. There is no denying the fact that a professional will ensure the elimination of all the irrelevant and inappropriate items from the credit report and with a high degree of accuracy. He will make use of his professional expertise, save you the trouble of reviewing and amending the credit report yourself. If your credit report contains foreclosures, repossessions and bankruptcies then you surely need to contact a credit repair professional to ensure that these items are removed.

Bankruptcies and other negative items on your credit report file will automatically go away after a specified period of time. For instance, bankruptcies remain in your credit report for about 10 years whereas other negative information will automatically be erased after 7 years. However, if an item is highly accurate and reliable, then it can be hard to eliminated but with the professionals constant use of tactics not known to everybody there is a level of success in it's removal.

In contrast, if an individual wishes to repair his credit report by himself, He should follow some of the items below:

Get a copy of your credit report. Get the credit reports from, Equifax, Experian and Transunion. Thanks to the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), an individual is entitled to get a free copy of the credit report at least once in a year from each of these credit agencies. Alternatively, a consumer can opt for a paid copy of the credit report either from an online credit reporting firm or from each of these credit bureaus.

Check your credit report for inaccurate items: Once you have an access to a copy of your credit report, go through it and note all negative items present.

Gather necessary documents: The next step aims at moving ahead and collecting the necessary documents that will facilitate your item to be corrected from the credit report file. This documentation includes some of the key documents that you will use to support your claim.

Send the Dispute letter to the consumer reporting agency: After you gather the necessary documentation to support your claim, the final step is sending the letter of dispute to the credit reporting agency. This letter may include the details of the various items which are found to be inappropriate along with the copies of the documents which you have accumulated in support of your claim. Make sure to keep the original documents with you and send only the copies of the documents to these reporting agencies.

You should see results from this process within 30-45 days, make sure and respond to each letter you receive from the bureaus and stay on top of it until you are happy with the results.
