Is Under Car Lighting Legal?

Apr 16, 2008
Under car lighting is a unique and great way to customize your ride in your own personal style, but the law is not always understanding of personal style. The laws concerning lighting on and under vehicles vary from area to area and from state to state. Knowing what the law is in your area is a good idea before you invest in any lighting customization. This can save you some unnecessary trouble, tickets, and money if your local authorities have a law on the books that prohibit these lighting types. Tickets can be very expensive plus they can sometimes result in big fines. And this does not even begin to consider the hassle of sitting by the side of the road when you have been pulled over.

Lighting under your vehicle is a terrific way to make your car stand out as one of a kind. However, certain states prohibit neon car lighting in all forms, and many states may prohibit certain colors or only allow certain colors.

The state of Massachusetts expressly prohibits neon under car lighting in any color, because it does not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations, and it does not meet the exemption that is allowed by Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 90 Section 7. Michigan law does not allow any lighting equipment on vehicles that is not expressly required or permitted by Chapter 6 under Michigan law. An exception is in effect for lighting equipment that is both unlit and covered. This means that if you have this lighting type equipped on your vehicle, you must keep the lights unlit and covered any time you are on a public road, highway, or an adjacent right of way. In this state, lighting underneath your car can only be used for shows and showing off, and they can not be used while driving. In Arizona, the law allows vehicles to have certain lighting equipment that uses certain colors, but there are laws that prohibit different colored lights on the tires, undercarriage, and body of your car. This law is in place for safety, to keep drivers concentrating on the roadways and not on distracting lights from other cars.

If you want to get under car lighting to customize your car for show purposes, then it is not necessary for you to find out about the laws concerning this lighting in your area because you will probably never drive it on the roadways. But if you want this type of lighting so that your car is the center of attention as you drive down the street, it is a very good idea to check with your local authorities to guarantee that you will not be breaking any laws while you do it. Being pulled over by a police officer, and going through the time and hassle of sitting on the roadway waiting for a ticket, is not a pleasant experience for anyone. By knowing the laws in your area you can avoid this scenario.
