How Diabetes Affects Men

Apr 16, 2008
A person may very well think that the disease, diabetes, affects every diabetic the same way. This statement could not be farther from the truth at all; diabetes affects every individual differently. Things that can affect diabetes differ greatly depending upon age, race, gender, weight, lifestyle, activity level, diet, and family history.

The biggest leap in those diagnosed with diabetes seems to be in the men, according to a report in Circulation published in 2006. Males have a tendency to often ignore the symptoms of diabetes, therefore often tend to have more severe complications later on. The complications due to failure to diagnose and treat diabetes, and make the necessary lifestyle changes, in its early stages for a male may evolve into heart disease, circulatory problems, impotence, impaired vision, kidney disease, nerve damage, and possible amputation of hands, legs, or feet due to unmonitored symptoms of nerve damage and uncontrolled infections.

Possibly due to the male genders need to appear "macho" or "manly" many do not make the critical lifestyle changes that are essential to controlling their blood sugar levels. This puts them at even greater risks of severe complications. Men, for still unproven reasons, are two to three times more likely to need an amputation and are found to go blind more quickly than women.

One of the lifestyle modifications that men fail to follow is the complete change in their diet. Many males tend to stay with their usual diet such as continuous intake of junk foods, sodium-rich foods, high-fat foods, tans-fats, starches and foods that are from fast food chains and restaurants. You will rarely see a man ordering salad from the restaurant. However, the diet that most males curse is very important for health. These are Omega 3 fatty acids, whole grains, vegetable, poultry, fish and lean meats.

Another thing that has been a habit to men and one of the things that men tend to stick on is alcohol drinking. While alcohol may pose good effects in the body, this is only true if alcohol is moderately taken. However, to those who are suffering from diabetes, their livers tend to be very sensitive to alcohol substances. When the liver detects the presence of alcohol in the body, it stops producing glucose and this may lead to the decrease and fall of blood sugar level. This event is fetal and may even be deadly. Because males cannot be easily stopped from drinking alcohol, The American Diabetes Association suggests that it is alright for diabetic males to drink alcohol as long as they do this after eating meals or snacks.

One of the hardest to stop is smoking. Although several lessons and information about how smoking harms the body and about how a person will benefit from quitting, men still do not care. People diagnosed with diabetes are said to be more prone to different types of heart and cardiovascular disease. In worse cases, these are often the cause of death of these people. Cigarettes contain substances that can make the blood pressure rise as well as the level of blood sugar. When this happens, it will be very difficult to control the diabetes from getting severe. Moreover, smoking may damage the blood vessels and continuous occurrence of this may lead to foot ulcers, foot and leg infections and atherosclerosis. People smoking are also very sensitive to infections that may cause colds and respiratory diseases.

Males are also considered to be very stubborn most especially in checking their blood sugar level. This is extremely bad for diabetic patients. As much as possible, they should monitor their blood pressure because rising and falling of blood sugar level is not good for patients suffering from diabetes.

From everything that was mentioned above, it is easy to say that men are more hard-headed than women. Just because they want to maintain their macho and strong image, they tend to neglect their health and deny the fact that they should go to hospital or consult with doctors. That is why instead of having an early diagnosis for diabetes, the disease aggravates without getting diagnosed. This will then cause a more complicated treatment and riskier and more dangerous complications. All of these can be avoided, however, if males continue to be very stubborn, it might be difficult to recover from having diabetes.
