How To Go About An Intervention For Drug Or Alcohol Addicts

Apr 17, 2008
The intervention process is rather tricky, considering one needs to convince an alcohol or drug addict that they need to seek help for their problem. This can often be the most frustrating phase in recovery for those around the addict. Likewise, there are steps to be taken to ensure success.

The ultimate goal of an intervention is to convince the addict that the substance they are abusing is bad for them, has had a negative impact on their life, and will continue to do so until they seek change. Only until they admit that there is a problem and agree with what they are hearing can true recovery take place. Studies also show that success rates are higher when multiple people attempt the intervention- not just one.

The first step in every drug or alcohol addiction is for the addict to admit there is a problem. If the addict believes there is no problem, then no solution can be found. As soon as the addict admits there is a problem, which doesn't always take much convincing, there is a very good chance that the person will go on to get the help they need.

As family and friends of addicts tend to find, interventions aren't the easiest things to accomplish. An intervention can be tough to perform since addicts aren't welcome to the idea of changing their lifestyle. Government programs and other organizations can not only give advice on the matter, but also help perform that actual intervention on the addict.

The intervention is only the first part of a long process in recovery. After a success in intervention, the addict and those involved will need to seek professional help. This usually includes the help of a psychologist or even a doctor so that medication can be obtained to help the process of recovery progress.

The most frightening prospect of the recovery process is the possibility of a relapse. In a relapse, the addict goes back to their addiction and essentially undoes any progress that was made in the recovery process. Help with this specific problem can be obtained through therapists and common doctors skilled in addiction.

It's common to replace one habit with another- meaning that if an addiction is to be fully cured, it's sometimes necessary to take up a new habit. Smokers commonly chew gum when they feel the need for a cigarette. Likewise, drug or alcohol users can find new ways to channel their addiction into safer actions.

The drug or alcohol addiction recovery process is a very tough one indeed. It comes as no surprise to find that addicts can go years in the rehabilitation process before finally being able to say that they are free of the addiction. Because of this, it's important to not rush things and not expect immediate results. Instead, stick with the addict and do your best to ensure the intervention was not in vain.
