Memory Development Strategies You Can Exercise

Apr 17, 2008
Memory refers to the human's capacity to retain and recall things. The human brain is the grand storage system of various events and information. The events, experiences, outlook of a human or animal, every single thing is stored in the brain. Some of the events are stored even without the knowledge of the person. Some of the things are remembered after a long time too, while many of the events are forgotten within a short period.

Enhancing the memory is nothing less than an art. There are several advantages of having a good memory. The very fundamental advantage of a good memory is to remember the answers during an exam. On a larger view, a person can recall the criminal's face or the series of events on the crime scene when has a good memory. An individual's overall personality depends on the level of memory he holds. In daily life also, our perception is based on our experiences, thoughts, and seen and heard things, altogether on memory. That is why it is very essential to develop the memory.

It is not so hard to train our mind to remember things. A dedicated practice for few days makes a remarkable variation. There are some fundamental things that are to be known about the memory. First of all, we tend to remember those things very easily in which we are interested. Small kids memorize the names and details about their favorite cartoon character. This is so, because we tend to pay more attention to the things we like. So, attention is the key of a good memory.

One can begin with simple things. For instance, one glances casually to a passerby while he is walking on the road. After the person is passed, try to answer number of questions. Who was the person- man or woman, what was he wearing, what was the color of his shirt and pants, what was he wearing on his wrists- a watch or bracelet, what was the color and kind of footwear he has, etc. At the first time, one might not answer all these queries. But after practicing for a while one can have a considerable progress. This process can be applied to a shop window. One can write down the topic they remember. Slowly one gets the habit of asking the questions to himself about the smaller details of the matter or person he glanced. There is no need to stop and watch carefully towards the object or thing. The quality that is being enhanced here is to pay attention to the object within a glance also. Try to remember things, events or persons that came across in the day before bedtime.

There is an effective way for students to remember and recall the answers. Read one paragraph from the book that is to be understood. Then close the book and try to remember the substance in the paragraph. There is no need to repeat the same words by author. Try to remember the meaning of those words. Once again open the book and read through the same paragraph. And once again try to recall the content closing the book. In this method, one can improve the memory very easily.
